Dear Parents and Guardians:

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the holiday season and the end of 1st trimester is right around the corner!  We have had an extremely exciting, fun-filled fall here at Hygiene and I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of these celebrations and provide updates as we enter the month of November.

On behalf of the entire staff, I want to extend my gratitude and appreciation for the generosity and support with the 2018 Jogathon. We raised over $25,000 as a result of the hard work of students and donations from the Hygiene community and beyond.  We appreciate all the work and efforts made to raise this money for our school.

On October 31st, we will be celebrating Halloween as a school. As a tradition, we begin our Halloween celebration with a Parade.  This starts at 2:30 pm. Following the parade, classroom teachers will have parties in classrooms (see information from classroom teachers).  As a reminder, please avoid scary costumes and masks that cover up the entire face so that our younger students feel safe.

We have a very special visitor coming to Hygiene on our Late Start day!  On November 7, we will have a camel come to our school in the afternoon as a kickoff for our journey to Egypt in March.  This is going to be an outstanding experience for our students! In addition, we are also calling all parents, artists or others with theatrical backgrounds to join us for our Informational Parent Meeting on Hawk Air November 15 at 4:00 pm in the library.  This is a great opportunity to learn about Hawk Air and how all families can get involved in this school-wide event.

Do you know anyone interested in Kindergarten for the Fall of 2019?  If so, please invite them to our Kindergarten Open House on November 7th from 5:30-6:30 pm.  This is a great opportunity to learn about our Kindergarten program.  Kindergarten Registration for the Fall of 2019 and Open Enrollment starts on December 3rd!  Please mark your calendars now.

Our Holiday Meal will be November 12th.  Tickets are $4.00 per person.  We will also be recognizing our Veterans on this day.  Please invite any Veterans to attend our Holiday Meal.   This is a great community event so please join your child for a nice holiday meal during their lunch hour.

Take Care and Happy Trick or Treating! Please find more important updates below.

This Week's Updates:

Halloween Information & Pumpkin Contest
We are looking forward to Halloween at Hygiene!  Please remember that students may not bring any items that resemble weapons to school.  Costumes will be put on (including make-up - remember, no scary make-up or face masks!) just prior to the parade that starts at 2:30 pm.

The PTO is sponsoring a
STEAM-Inspired Pumpkin Contest!    Please plan to take your pumpkin home at the end of the school day on October 31st.  If you do not wish to take your pumpkin home, then we will have compost bins on hand to recycle them.  Click here for the printable version of the entry form.

Hawk Air Update
Another exciting year of Hawk Air activities is underway!  As students are preparing for their excursion to Egypt, we have lots of exciting plans!  On Wednesday, November 7th we will have a very special visitor at Hygiene - A CAMEL!  Are you interested in helping with more upcoming Hawk Air events?  We would love for you to attend our Hawk Air planning meetings on 11/15 (4-5:30 pm) and 12/11 (8-9 am).
School Photo Retakes
If you missed school picture day, or would like retakes taken, Retake Day is October 30th (they will start at 10 am and will stay through PM Preschool).  If you want retakes, please send in your original photos with your child on retake day - you will get a retake with the same package you originally ordered.  If you need a new order form, those can be picked up in the office.
Spelling Bee
B - o - r - n - e - o.  Borneo - do you know what that is (we had to look it up in the front office!)?  Besides being the third largest island in the world, it's also one of the fourth grade study words!  The grade level spelling bees will be on November 8th, and the school-wide spelling bee will be on December 13th.  Click here for the study lists!
Holiday Meal
Family members (including non-Hygiene siblings), friends, and community members are invited to our Holiday Meal on November 12th.  You may purchase tickets for the meal ($4/ticket) at the office.  The cut-off to purchase tickets is November 6th.  Tickets do not need to be purchased for students (it is considered a regular hot lunch meal).  The menu includes turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls, salad bar, pumpkin rolls, and cranberry sauce (milk also comes with the meal, water is an extra fifty cents).  November 12th is also Veterans Day and we look forward to having several local veterans join us that day for a special assembly and the meal.  We are also looking for volunteers to help serve that day - if you are interested in helping, please click here for more information and to sign up.
100 Mile Club
Total School Miles = 2,601!

Wow, this week was inspiring with the beautiful fall weather and the amazing amount of children out there working so hard!  Thank you to parents and guardians for ensuring your child has an opportunity to participate even with colder temperatures!  Speaking of the colder temperatures, please remember to dress appropriately for the weather.  Boots, coats, whatever you need to keep your child warm and happy.   I prefer to stay outside, as the fresh air does us all good.   That being said, if it does drop below 20 degrees and/or we have an excess amount of moisture, we will walk the hallways indoors.
Now is a great time of year to obtain miles.  We have runners reaching 25 miles weekly now, which means they receive their t-shirt!
There are a lot of opportunities for extra miles in the next couple of months including a couple of free ones like the Maverick March on November 3rd and the Turkey Trot in Louisville on Thanksgiving day.  Check the list of events here.  Take note that Hygiene Elementary is co-hosting a free event at Macintosh Lake on December 8th, place it on your calendar at home!
Finally, a big thank you to our parent volunteers that assist with scanning, updating our charts and moving with us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings!

Request - Mummy Wrappings
Kindergarten and first grade students are gathering ace bandages and sheets (whole or cut into strips) and anything else that would make reusable mummy wrappings.  If you are able to donate any of these items to Kindergarten and First Grade, please send them to the office.  Thank you!
