Welcome to our 8th newsletter!  Next week is Refugee Week so we'll be focussing on things coming up in London between the 17th - 23rd June.  The theme for Refugee Week 2019 is You, me and those who came before - experiences of displacement that are found in our families, neighbourhoods and history.

There's a ton of events happening across London next week and we've made a selection of some of the more cheery, inspiring ones that might be of interest (rather than stirring painful memories of loss).  But the full listing can be seen here.

As part of Refugee Week, HostNation is participating in the Arsenal Refugee football tournament on Friday 21st.  We've put out a call for team players and invited them to a What's App group so if you know your friend is keen and might like to play, please encourage them to respond or get in touch with

Our friends at Counterpoint Arts have an amazing programme of refugee performance, music, dance, film, photography all over London but especially at the V&A.  They have organised special tours of the museum with artists on 16 June... but, if you can, get yourself and your friend down to the V&A for their Refugee Week inspired Friday Late with musical sets, dance, DJ-ing, beatbox, rappers, poetry, story-telling and much more from 6-10pm on Friday 21st and all free!

If you find yourself in central London with your friend pop into Somerset House to see the free photography exhibition Kaleidoscope: Immigration and Modern Britain

On Monday 17th St Paul's Cathedral invites you to: ‘A Journey Through St Paul’s: A Refugee Week Celebration’, art, music, poetry and theatre from 6-8pm.  It is free but registration is essential.

On Tuesday 18th there's stand up comedy from refugee comics at the Migration Museum SE1, 7-9.30pm tickets £5 and on Thursday 20th there's Migration Late at the Museum from 6-10pm with performances, art, workshops, food and more, all for free.

On Thursday 20th in SE5, Theatre Deli are hosting Beyond Borders Arabs are not Funny - 4 comedians from across the Arab world.  8pm free entry for asylum seekers and refugees. And on Sat 22nd Theatre Deli have an evening of Music Without Borders.

If you missed Pizza Shop Heroes the show is on at Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre on Friday 21st (refugees £5)

On Sunday 23rd from 10am-8pm there will be a free festival of all things Afghan and central Asian in Lampton Park, Hounslow.

Also on Sunday 23rd from 5 - 6.15 there is a free music concert at The Round Chapel, Hackney with vocal ensemble Stile Antico, Syrian oud-player Rihab Azar and refugee choir Woven Gold.

And exciting HostNation news...

We have three fantastic new Trustees recently appointed to the HostNation board - Dina Nayeri, Emiljan Gega and Jo Winterbottom.  Dina and Emiljan fled persecution in their home countries (Iran and Albania) and grew up as refugees in the US and Ireland.  We're delighted to have all three on board (literally) and you can read about them on our website here

If anyone is free at lunchtime on World Refugee Day (20th June) you can hear Dina talk about her new book The Ungrateful Refugee at the University of East London, talk, Q&A and book signing.

As you can see there are plenty of free things to do in London next week as part of Refugee Week but here are a few more non-refugee related:

1. It's a beautiful time to take your friend to Kew Gardens and we have community membership so just email us for the voucher which allows you both free entry.
2. Eel Pie Island has open studios on Sat/Sun 22-23 & 29-30 JUNE. 11am - 6.00pm if you fancy exploring this private island and artist colony
3. And then there are various festivals... Summer By the River started on May 30th and runs until 1st Sept
4. And the Great Exhibition Road Festival in South Ken has ticketed events on the 28th and is free on the 29th and 30th June

All best wishes, HostNation team
