  • Our neighboring charter schools to the north were recently recognized in the news. With long waiting lists, existing schools are expanding and five new schools will open next year! “We’ve always approached the charter school piece around providing something in the community that doesn’t exist,” said Travis Franklin, head of schools at Spokane International Academy. Opinion: How we’re succeeding at reshaping education for students of color at KairosPDX
The Oregonian recently published an opinion piece by Kali Thorne Ladd, Executive Director at KairosPDX. Opened in 2014, this growing charter school in Northeast Portland serves 213 students in grades K through 5.

KairosPDX supports a school environment based on love and inclusion, with a student-centered approach. The mission at KairosPDX is to eliminate the prolific racial achievement and opportunity gaps by cultivating confident, creative and compassionate leaders. The school embraces the whole child and values family partnership. "It feels like they know my child here at Kairos. There is a partnership between families and Kairos to help with racial identity, but also identity as a whole, for her to be confident in who she is and find her voice to speak her truth," a parent shares.

KairosPDX challenges Oregon to address the systemic failures in our schools, the inequities that exist for students of color and their families.

"When children are in a community of belonging where they are seen and valued, their brains are more able to thrive. Imagine the transformative power of an educational system where all children are seen and valued? Where black children are held to high expectations and are nurtured as future leaders of our community?"
