“Inclusive, good quality education is a foundation for dynamic and equitable societies."
                                        Desmond Tutu

The December 2021 Holiday Fundraiser enabled UWC membership to achieve our goal to offer significantly more Coast Union /Leffingwell High School graduates access to inclusive and good quality education.  Thanks to the impressive efforts of our board, generous donations from our membership and charitable support from our business community, we raised a whopping total of $12,797.13 toward our scholarship fund.  Our heartfelt thanks is extended to all of those who contributed and made this worthy endeavor a success.  Our special thanks goes out to our board and most noteworthy, Shannon Sutherland, our Ways and Means Vice President, who took this enormous task on and dedicated endless hours to making this all come to fruition.

New Members
Laureen ItalianoI grew up in Fresno, often visiting the coast.  I graduated from San Diego State University and moved to Los Angeles where I met my husband, Peter, and started my human resources career.  We raised our children, Michael and Erica, in Westlake Village.  When Michael was 4, I began working part time at his preschool, eventually becoming assistant director. Those 10 years were rewarding and fun.
When Peter passed away in 2014, I bought and fixed up a cottage on Park Hill, and became involved with the Scarecrow Festival and the Cambria Historical Museum.  In March, I bought a home in Pennsylvania to be near my daughter and her husband, just in case grandchildren are in the future!
I look forward to attending UW events when I am in town, and helping out in any way I can!

Valerie Ratto ~ Hello, I am a new member and my name is Valerie Ratto. My late husband and I shared a love of the ocean so settled in Cambria in 1985. I have been in public and private education for almost 50 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, the central valley and San Luis Obispo county. I am currently teaching a confirmation class at church. I enjoy a variety of activities including walking my dog, raising canaries, reading and hand crafts. I joined University Women of Cambria because of your goals to facilitate continuing education of our youth. It is my hope to contribute to your endeavors.

Kris Philbin ~ Kris Philbin has lived in many different locales, largely due to her husband Terry's work in bridge engineering.   This included several locations in SLO county, Colorado and Nevada, and settling in Cambria in 2015, having spent her childhood in Vermont and CA, graduating from Arroyo Grande High School.  During those years, she attended various colleges around the country, studying systems analysis.  Terry's roots are in the SLO area where they still have family.
Her careers have been varied as well, including being a library IT specialist, teaching technology, and even working at Riley's Department Store in SLO back in the day!
Kris's hobbies include telemark skiing and mountaineering, having climbed five 14,000 foot peaks and many 13,000 foot ones.   With Terry, she is an amateur mycologist and together they founded an annual mushroom festival in Buena Vista that is still held as a benefit for their historical society.
