“Learn to celebrate life, living, and the opportunity for giving –to yourself and others.  Share your spirit.” Dennis Pezzato, PhD

Dennis Pezzato, our guest speaker for UWC February event, wrote those words of wisdom in his book We Don’t Come with Instructions.  At our meeting we were fortunate enough to hear directly his thoughts on what creates a better understanding of ourselves and others and how to include balance in our lives.
His presentation, which gave us insightful guidelines for Self-Care and a Healthy Lifestyle, was especially relevant considering the challenging times we have been facing for the past several years.

Our generous UWC members are prime examples of citizens who give to others through our scholarship program. This altruism and commitment to helping individuals pursue higher education, are indicative of our support and ongoing contribution to future generations.

Re-entry Scholarships
We are excited to announce a new UWC scholarship being offered to Cambria/San Simeon residents who are pursuing higher education, after a break from high school.  The Re-entry Scholarship allows for individuals to apply for funding to assist with financing their post high school educational pursuits. This new opportunity has been posted on our UWC Web Page, at the Cuesta College Financial Aid Office and was announced in the Cambrian, as well as KTEA radio station.
This broadening of our scholarship recipients to be more inclusive, was based on requests from our membership and donors. The response has been very positive.
Louise Mazerov, a UWC member, has donated the cost of one of the Re-entry Scholarships to honor her godmother, Dolores Johnson, who was a stanch supporter of higher education.  We thank Louise for her generous support of this very worthwhile effort.

 UWC March 21st event
Our next luncheon event will be a Scarecrow Making
Demonstration workshop presented on Zoom by Chris Fischer and Tish Roberts.  Look for details and reservations in our upcoming flyer.

Sarah Moore
After growing up in the Bay Area, I attended Cal Poly SLO. I received my masters in education, and was hired by the Coast Unified School district in 1981. I retired in June and am loving it! My daughter lives in Paso, and my son in San Diego. I spend my time with my husband, as well as my sister and 96 year old dad who both live in Cambria. I have horses and a dog who also keep me busy! Looking forward to being a part of this group that helps so many of my former students!

Sunshine Reminder ☀️
Please keep in mind that you can let us know of any member who needs a get well or condolences card sent to them on behalf of UWC.  Please contact our Sunshine Chair, Georgette Milla -gmilla@charter.net

Based on recommendations from our membership and members of the community, UWC is currently looking at revisions of our bylaws under the following categories -
  • Limiting membership to women only
  • Limiting membership to degree holders only
  •  Awarding scholarships to graduating seniors of Cambria High Schools only
The proposed changes would include-
  •  To allow for “All individuals who wish to encourage and support the pursuit of higher education” to become a member under membership guidelines
  • To allow for non-degree holders to join UWC
  • To include scholarship recipients who concluded their high school education but did not pursue higher education immediately following completion of their high school diploma.

This is early in the process and there will be time for member questions and input as we proceed. Please let Co-Presidents, Avril Allan or Penny Johnson know if you have questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Your Co-Presidents, Avril Allan & Penny Johnson
