Kim's Corner

When I stepped up to the ledge of La Fonda on August 4, 2018, I can’t lie – I was terrified. You see, I’m afraid of heights and even more afraid of falling. I remember shouting, “Who’s idea was this?!” and then remembering that it was MY idea.

I looked down at the crowd gathered below and saw my 4-year-old daughter looking up at me. She, too, was afraid. I knew at that moment that I had to push past my comfort zone and show her that it’s important to take on challenges, even when they scare you.

As I reached the ground, my daughter jumped into my arms and wrapped her arms around my neck. My hope is that on the days when life challenges her, my daughter will reflect back on the day she watched her mom scale a building and know that she can also do hard things.

It’s not only important to lead by example but to also give girls the tools they need to take on challenges. When you support Conquer Heights, Empower Girls, you’re not only supporting the person rappelling on this one day - you’re supporting an organization that works 365 days a year to give local girls the tools they need to succeed in life.

Right now the odds are stacked against New Mexico’s girls. Just this summer, New Mexico ranked dead last among states when it comes to the economic, educational and medical well-being of its children. New Mexico continues to have one of the highest teen birth rates in the country. 18.5 percent of girls in the state have reported experiencing cyberbullying.

It’s important now more than ever to take a stand for New Mexico’s girls. I ask you to consider supporting Girls Inc. of Santa Fe by sponsoring one of our girls to rappel on the
Strong, Smart, and Bold team.

Join us on August 3, 2019, at La Fonda for Conquer Heights, Empower Girls! We’d love to see you!

Sincerely,

Kim Brown, CEO

Girls make Joseph Cornell boxes!

This month, girls in Group Blue learned about the work of American artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). Cornell was famous for his assemblage works housed in shallow wooden boxes. The girls were able to make their very own Cornell Boxes with Debra Baxter at MAKE Santa Fe.

Following their lesson about the history of collages and making their own, the girls toured the MAKE Santa Fe property and learned about the different machinery available to their artists. This collaboration, as well as the girls' new appreciation for art, was made possible thanks to our fantastic Giving Tuesday donors!

Conquer Heights, Empower Girls

Are you looking for a way to make a difference in the Santa Fe community WHILE having fun? If so, rappeling in Girls Inc. of Santa Fe's second annual Conquer Heights, Empower Girls is for you!

Araseli Varela, Girls Inc. of Santa Fe Executive Assistant, and rappeler in the inaugural Conquer Heights, Empower Girls, said she had a great time rappelling last year.

"Being apart of (Girls Inc. of Santa Fe's) Conquer Heights, Empower Girls event allowed me to set a personal goal and challenge myself," Varela said. "Fundraising $1,000 on behalf of girls in Santa Fe, with the support of my family and friends, allowed me to challenge myself, push myself out of my comfort zone and do something that ultimately I was really proud of."

Girls practice self-love!

At Girls Inc. of Santa Fe, being kind to ourselves is just as important as being kind to others. Therefore, we tasked Group Green girls to take on a challenge of giving themselves compliments!

During the Flower Petal Project, each girl created a collage of flower petals. On each petal, the girls wrote down something they admire about themselves. Their facilitators loved seeing the girls acknowledge themselves for being smart, brave, active, caring and energetic. Many of the girls admitted that complimenting themselves did not come easy at first. Their facilitators talked with them about how taking a break from being hard on ourselves is healthy and very important.
