Dear reader,
As we begin the new academic year, I would like to extend the warmest of (remote!) welcomes to our new students. Through these challenging times, Tangent is continuing to create a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem and facilitate collaboration for all at Trinity and beyond.
Trinity has been recognised by Pitchbook as the number 1 university in Europe for student entrepreneurship for 5 years in a row, and Tangent, Trinity’s ideas workspace has been working with students from all schools in developing their innovative and entrepreneurial mindset and enterprises.
An innovative mindset is not something that can be studied and leaned from a textbook. It is a courageous mindset underpinned by a supportive environment (at least in Tangent) that enables and encourages agility, adaptability, and resilience in all aspects of life as well as business.  We encourage our students to be brave in trying out new ideas and if they don’t work out, that’s OK you are rewarded for taking the chance; you grow, you learn and you experience.
Over the past four weeks, there have been many more highlights and significant milestones passed for Tangent. While LaunchBox may have wound down for now after a captivating finale at Demo Day, Tangent has an exciting schedule for the month ahead. Our TEP Module and UG Certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship are both underway, and we are currently hosting a range of dynamic events as part of Tangent 31, Trinity’s Innovation Festival. We also recently virtually welcomed Red Bull to the Tangent space for the annual Red Bull Basement event!

Red Bull Basement at Tangent:

This year at Tangent, Red Bull Basement is empowering students in all areas of study to use innovation to drive positive change with their campuses communities and beyond. Over the course of the event at Tangent, a series of interactive and stimulating talks and workshops were delivered by industry leaders, including Karl Thomas (Founder of Creatovation) and Robert Fitzhugh (Founder of Film Smart Productions).

Finalist teams will have a chance to bring their ideas to life, guided by mentors from relevant innovation spaces and access to thought leaders from around the world. After three adventurous days packed with networking and inspiration, they will be ready to ace a Final Pitch to the experts. Country finalists will receive:

  • €1k funding to develop their idea during the development phase.
  • Honor (Global Partner) development kit, which will include one MagicBook laptop series and one HONOR X phone series. The Country Finalists can keep these products even after the development phase.
  • All-inclusive trip to the Global Workshop - Final. This is a 4-day trip, including master-classes with international innovation leaders, visits to innovation centres, networking opportunities, concluding with a final pitching session, where our Country Finalists get to pitch their idea and what they have been working on for the past month to a broad audience. Location for the Global Workshop is tbc, but last year it was held in Toronto and the year before that it was held in Berlin.

SOOTHE is an EIT-Health funded project which seeks to find out what mental health and wellness means for adults with intellectual disability across Europe. This project will create an electronic Quilt from images of mental health and wellness made by people with intellectual disability across Europe. Each square will represent a person with intellectual disability’s perspective on mental health and wellness, will be carefully photographed and sent by email to a designated email address.
