His journey from the age of 16 as a young entrepreneur to establishing and leading one of America's most successful organisations and now his current role is an awe-inspiring journey. We look forward to collaborating with the Ambassador and the US Embassy on building our community in the forthcoming months.
Tangent Graduation 2020

Last week marked a fantastic milestone for Tangent, Trinity's Ideas Workspace with 150 students graduating from Trinity College Dublin surrounded by family and friends. This is the first cohort of students to graduate from Tangent since we officially formed last September. Congratulations to all our graduates!
From the smiles and laughter on graduation day, one of our students, Liam Porter, produced a beautiful poem that encapsulates his experience:

Magic

Hope for better, but do not sit waiting for some fairy tale finish to grant all your desires.
Instead, grow to understand that you already hold -
the key to happiness, in your own hand.

You are the product of your own choices.
Captain of your ship. Master of your destiny.

Dream of more, but drive yourself forward.
The magic you yearn for - is already inside.

(Liam Porter)

IP Module - Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Tangent has started its Intellectual Property module (5 ECTS) this week (from 3-7th of February 2020) which has a mix of Masters research and PhD Students from Trinity and Queen's University Belfast. During the intellectual property module the following themes will be introduce students to the issues and actions associated with quality, early identification and protection of intellectual property. These include an exploration of copyright, patenting, trademarks, industrial design and know-how as well as ways of deriving value from the 'unprotectable'. Students will be given the opportunity to interact with experts in these areas of practice.

  Creative Thinking and Innovation Module

Tangent is currently accepting expressions of interest for its Creative Thinking & Innovation (10ECTS) module from Trinity Masters & PhD. The module is part of Tangent and Queen’s University Belfast joint Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The Creative Thinking & Innovation module has three core themes; Theme I: Developing confidence in creative thinking targets the student as an individual. The objective is to introduce the student to the inherent risk of failure in creative thinking but also the latent learning for the next cycle. The module is delivered through activity-based exercises at individual and group level. Theme II: Evolution of innovative ideas in multi-disciplinary teams targets team working in a creative context. Here, openness to new ideas and passion for ideas presented come into creative conflict. Case examples of organisations such as IDEO form a basis for group activities carried out both inside and outside of the seminar room. Theme III: How to translate ideas into value creation brings the preceding two topics together. What is value will depend upon the setting and the perceptions of the various stakeholders. Different types of value are envisaged: economic, social, environmental, knowledge. Working as individuals and as members of teams, the objective is to introduce students to the opportunity that innovators have to create or to destroy value.

The 2020 E-Labs challenge: "Bridging the Information Gap - Tackling Opiod Mis-use and Addiction

With big Pharma hooked on profit and doctors at breaking point, consumers/patients are self-diagnosing more frequently and usually via Google. They are relying less on traditional medical advice, leading to major distortions in diagnoses, made worse by the increasing availability of synthetic opioids. The 2020 e-labs programme will challenge course participants to apply new, creative and entrepreneurial insights in order to arrive at commercial solutions to help resolve this real-life correlation between mis-diagnosis, mis-information and newer, more potent forms of opioid addiction. This E-Labs programme will comprise Innovation and Entrepreneurship teaching delivered on a part-time basis and available to undergraduate/master/PhD students as well as citizen and patient group activists. The programme will foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within the student population and the development of the core skills of innovation and enterprise. It will be practically oriented with a specific emphasis on project work and problem-based learning. Students will develop the soft skills essential to any entrepreneur or intrapreneur. E-labs 2020 will commence on Thursday, the 12th of March, 2020 at 1300hrs. The dates for the second 6-week block with be confirmed in due course but we will commence in October 2020 and conclude, six weeks later, in November. We need 50 students from all academiclevels, schools, and courses to commit to the programme. We require 25 in Dublin and 25 in Groningen. To register an expression of interest, you simply need to email us with your name and contact details. In order to participate in this 12-week programme, to be run over the course of 2020 (i.e. 6 weeks in early 2020 and a further 6 weeks in late 2020), you will need to commit to the entire 12-week programme. The programme will consist of 1 hour-long workshop per week with content delivered and streamed by contributors and industry partners between Dublin and Groningen. In between workshops, students will have access to mentors who will help them with the development of their ideas. At the end of the programme, participants will be invited to pitch to a panel of investors and industry experts.
