March Newsletter:
CEO of Tangent, Trinity's Ideas Workspace

Dear reader,

As we mark one year since Tangent moved online,  we continue to exemplify leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship (remotely!).

Recently, we've launched a new professional education course titled Innovation Leadership and Transformation and welcomed students to our Postgraduate Certificates in Healthcare Innovation and Climate Entrepreneurship - two new programmes for Tangent!

We also announced the succesful applicants for the LaunchBox 2021 student accelerator programme. Alsessor, the AI Accelerator continues in partnership with Altada. It's exciting to see so much activity here at Tangent, we are grateful to all our supporters!

Finally, I'd like to wish you all a happy Easter - remember to stay connected!

Getting to Know Team Tangent:
Head of Engagement

Aine joined Tangent in October 2019 as Head of Engagement.  With a background in innovation and commercial marketing, Aine’s focus currently is to grow awareness of the Tangent mission, internally amongst schools and students and to establish partnerships externally with local, national and international institutions and organisations.

In her free time Aine is Mum to Ava and Heidi (who are both scheduled to sit state exams this summer!) Aine enjoys all things outdoors, meeting new people and has fingers crossed for Ireland in Summer Olympics 2021!

Launch of Executive Breakout: Innovation Leadership and Transformation

At Tangent, we believe that in order to lead the way through change, you must change the way you lead.

We are delighted to announce the launch of a new Professional Education programme, Innovation Leadership and Transformation!

As we've seen from the COVID-19 crisis, organisations that creatively respond to challenges are thriving right now - but what does it take? Our unique 4-week programme starts 26 May and equips executives with the future skills they need to lead on innovation with confidence.

The design of this programme has been informed by industry research and international best practice, combining innovation leadership training with bespoke coaching.
(See below the roundtable discussion delivered by our facilitators and coaches!)

Specifically, this programme is designed for executives and will enable them to:

Acquire the tools to plan, deliver and manage an innovation action plan for their organisation or division.

  • Lead out on innovation activities with purpose and clarity and be ambassadors for innovation within their organisation.
  • Foster a culture of innovation with remote teams and adapt to changing work practices and environments.
  • Develop a positive approach to leadership and organisational change, through Appreciative Inquiry, where the focus of change builds on existing strengths.

Innovation and Enterprise Development

The finish line is fast approaching for our I&E students! The third iteration of Tangent's Regional Post Grad Cert in Innovation and Enterprise Development has just moved into the final Module. This module takes the business ideas generated in Module 1, validated in the Market as Opportunities Module 2 and works to craft a viable sustainable business model.

This year, the programme invited applicants from three regions; Athlone, Wexford and Dublin and as one of our most popular Springboard offerings, the 80 places were heavily oversubscribed. As a testament to the level of interest received for the programme, a further 48 places have been funded, and a Spring Innovation and Enterprise Development has just begun!

We were delighted to welcome some notable contributors on this years programme - the core team of Change Donations! As the 2018 winners of LaunchBox, Change Donations (Lizzy Hayashida, Will Conaghan and Matt Conaghan) are all Trinity Alumni. We were thrilled to have them offer their expertise and insight to our students this year!

Creative Thinking, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Similarly, the students on the PG Cert in Creative Thinking, Innovation & Entrepreneurship are now in their final module, Enterprise Development!

Students began their journey in October, learning about theories of creativity and innovation, creative collaboration and design thinking methodologies. Working with several external industry host organisations from the corporate and not-for-profit sectors, their projects culminated in a live virtual pitch event in December. Our students' host projects spanned a diverse range of industries, including British Standards International, THE Homeshare, See Dublin, Our Tandem, AvTrain, and other exciting new and established organisations.

In January, students identified their own business ideas, refined their value proposition and created a customer journey map for their product or service. In this final module, this cohort are building on the research and skills they have already developed to create a Lean Business Model Canvas for their business idea.

Supported by wonderful mentors, Jackie Breen and Louise Quinn, the CTIE group have grown in knowledge, confidence and ability in a few short months. We are delighted to see how far our students have come and cannot wait to see where their journey takes them!

LaunchBox 2021: Meet the Teams
After a very competitive round of applications, and a fantastic pitch event earlier this month, we now have our 10 startups for this year’s LaunchBox programme. As you can see from the team bios (below), it is another year with an eclectic mix of industries and disciplines represented – and we are very excited to be working with them this summer.

Thank you to all the teams who applied, who pitched, and who shared their ideas with us. Thanks also to our judging panel: David Scanlon, Resolve Partners; Aimee-Louise Carton, CEO & Cofounder of KeepAppy; and Ken Finnegan, CEO of Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace.

To find out more, or to reach out about a LaunchBox team, please email our Student Startup & Innovation Manager, Alison Treacy [] who manages the LaunchBox programme.
This year’s LaunchBox teams:
Diglot is a revenue-generating language learning and book publishing company. They take classic novels like Pride and Prejudice and Sherlock Holmes and weave foreign words into the English sentences.
Field Of Vision is a device that enables visually impaired football fans to experience live sport. They use computer vision to track the location of the ball on the pitch and translate it to a moving finger-piece on the device, enabling the action to be felt in real time.
Fonz Music uses a physical product, a Fonz Coaster, and their in-house app to simplify song requests. HOSTs connect their Spotify to the Fonz Coaster. Their GUESTs then tap the coaster to join the session, search up & select a song, and then tap the coaster again, automatically queuing that song to their HOST's Spotify, just like a jukebox.
Live for today & prepare for tomorrow. One Sure Thing is End-of-Life planning made easy. A digital planning assistant for customers to organise all their wishes and vital documents in one secure online safe.
Park Turtle enables yacht clubs to manage their boat parking and seasonal fees all in one smart software. With space at a premium, clubs need to optimise their parking to maximise their revenue. That’s where Park Turtle can help.

The Donator lists an unwanted item on the app, The Upcycler collects the item, upcycles it as they see fit, and lists it on the app to be sold to The Buyer.

UniPeer is a platform for university students experiencing loneliness. It facilitates peer-to-peer support, connecting students through shared experiences and interests. In essence, the platform will act as a support group for university students. The platform is unique because it addresses the issue of loneliness in a university setting.
