News from Prairie Hill

Dear Friends,

Happy May Day! There are signs of spring all over Prairie Hill. Daffodils are in bloom and hardy perennials are popping up. People are out pumping up bike tires. Lawn chairs are starting to appear. Onions and potatoes have been planted. There's lots going on. Come by for a visit and we'll put you to work!

Carpenters are busy doing the framing on our newest building. The shingling is almost complete and they are starting to cut the windows and doors. Stop by and watch the progress. Photo by Pat Ryan.

Spring Cleaning Weekend

We do a deep cleaning of the common house twice a year. It's fun. Teams sign up to wash windows and screens, reorganize kitchen shelves, clean heater and dryer vents and filters, mop floors, polish furniture, clean porches, and air all the linens. Things are looking very spiffy. Come by quick!

National Cohousing Conference

Join us in Madison, Wisconsin this August for our first in-person conference since 2019. The main conference is August 26-28 with pre-conference intensives and tours August 25-26.

Sessions span the gamut from the nuts and bolts of planning community and designing for affordability, to building consensus creatively and creating camaraderie through social gatherings and activities. To see the full schedule, visit cohousing.org/cohoevents/2022-madison/Register before May 30 to get the early-bird discount.

Sycamore Greenway Cleanup

Several teams from Prairie Hill helped fish a ton of trash from the waterway and biking trail that snake through the Sycamore Greenway parkland just a few miles away.

Iowa City summer fun begins!

It's time to break out the lawn chairs and head to downtown Iowa City for the first Friday Night Concert of the season. The Iowa Steel Band from the University of Iowa School of Music will open the season on Friday, May 13. Their music ranges from Caribbean calypso and reggae to popular folk and jazz styles. The Friday Night Concert series is just one of the offerings of Summer of the Arts. Next up: three full days of music and art at the Iowa Arts Festival on June 3-5. It's all free! Check out the full schedule here: summerofthearts.org/

Mycelium Magic, the clay sculpture pictured above, was created and installed by Joan Harris of Ann Arbor. This treasured artwork is the centerpiece of the native wildflower garden planted by Joan’s longtime friend, Barb Bailey.
