Governor Glenn Youngkin Announces Over $8.1 Million in Growth and Opportunity Virginia Grants

Over $250K Awarded to Region 3 Projects
"GO Virginia allows us to invest in key projects that address regionally identified opportunities while fostering collaboration for economic growth between the private and public sectors," said Governor Youngkin. "These projects exemplify the innovative partnerships that GO Virginia was designed to promote and will advance Virginia’s position in critical industries such as life science and energy, as well as leverage emerging opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing."

Controlled Environment Agriculture Training in Middle Schools
Institute of Advanced Learning and Research
At the request of Carroll County Public Schools, leadership of the Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC™) initiative developed a unique, five-week controlled environment agriculture (CEA) module that allows middle school students to experience a full plant growth cycle. Introducing students to critical sectors like electrical engineering, quality control, automation and manufacturing engineering, the CEA module exemplifies the purpose and strategy of GO TEC: to proactively develop unique and memorable career exposure opportunities across strategic sectors.

Freehouse Meadows of Dan Brewery to Soon Open as First in Patrick County

The owner in cooperation with the county was recently approved for an $850,000 industrial revitalization loan to turn the abandoned mill into its very first brewery.

“We don’t have a whole lot of options in terms of places to gather, even if it’s just after five o’clock on weekdays or on weekends,” said Sean Adkins, director of economic development for Patrick County. “So, I know I’ll be the first in line when it does open.”

New Tobacco Commission Executive Director Wants to Bring More Energy Projects to Southwest and Southside Virginia

The Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission’s new executive director, James Campos, said that increasing energy projects and developments in Southwest and Southside Virginia is one of his goals for the position. 

Campos’ background is in energy – he was the director of the office of economic impact and diversity for the Department of Energy during the Trump administration. 

The commission invests in economic development projects throughout Southside and Southwest Virginia, areas that were previously reliant on tobacco farming, to help them recover from the loss of that industry.

Job Growth Stalls as Unemployment Rises in Southside Region

Hiring stalled in January across much of Southside Virginia, according to the latest monthly jobs report from the Virginia Employment Commission issued Friday.

While the national unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent in January, the lowest level since 1969, jobless rates in Brunswick, Charlotte, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and Pittsylvania counties climbed by roughly a point in the same period.
