CO- Vice President - Josh Brown

The reason I initially got involved with Veteran Garden Project was because of their mission and the community of people they are focused on working with. The people involved with VGP are an amazing group of people; Combat and garrison veterans, veteran spouses and supporters of the military alike, all working together towards the same goal. As a Marine Corps veteran myself, it is a wonderful feeling to be around these great people and an even better feeling to help other vets that can benefit from what we do.

I see myself growing with this organization and working on making this a nationwide project one day!

Our Last Fall Build

Saturday, October 19st @ 9 am - noon

Join us for a morning of fellowship and gardening!

We will be installing our last Fall build of the year for our
Veteran scholarship recipient Gordon.

About our October Garden recipient - Gordon Misner

Gordon was born into a military family at Fort Eustis, VA, and spent most of his youth with family in Cheyenne, WY. In 1975, he enlisted in the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY. Gordon found VGP on Facebook through his wife, Rockett, and thought it would be good way to relax and provide fresh food for the family. Both Gordon and Rockett are currently living with family since Hurricane Irma, whereby they lost everything and became homeless. Gordon does have previous gardening experience, and has been a chef for 40 years. He appreciates the freshness and economy of growing your own food; and, as he states, “It tastes better!”

Mackenzie's Mighty Mutt Cuts & Pat Richard Automotive Repair team up for VGP in November

Mackenzie Moore-Adams & Pat Richard reached out to VGP and asked if they could use their businesses in the month of November to help raise money, supplies and awareness about the VGP mission.  Of course we said, Heck Yes! We are so grateful to team up with these two locally owned businesses to help spread the word. Get your doggie a bath or get your car checked out and drop off a donation to VGP and enter to win a bunch of great prizes! It's a WIN-WIN! Thank you to our volunteer Chris Emerson for the local connection.
Things we are looking for:  garden hoses, wheelbarrows, eco friendly trellis, garden clippers, gift cards and monetary donations.

Mackenzie has loved animals since she was a young child.  Teachers at her school, FSDB, would comment about her love for animals in science labs, art and stories. Often, people in public would note how well she approached animals.

Mackenzie volunteered for two summers at The Alligator Farm working with reptiles and enjoyed every minute of her time there. She also volunteered at Cindy’s Dog Retreat for several summers and it became apparent that this might become a future occupation. Perhaps, Mackenzie has a special language; she is deaf yet communicates with dogs of every breed. The author Adrian Fogelin from Tallahassee exchanged communication on reading her books with Mackenzie during her high school years and has spent time with Mackenzie here in St. Augustine. Adrian has observed her with dogs, and was moved by her interactions with them, particularly cuddling with a dog whose owner said had never let anyone pet before, that she wrote Mackenzie into the dedication of her latest book – “Special thanks to my friend, Mackenzie Moore-Adams.  You’re an inspiration!”

Mackenzie received her schooling and license in Jacksonville and had planned to work for a local dog groomer. However, she soon learned that most places do not hire full time and she wanted to work as much as possible. Her step-dad built a beautiful shop in the garage and Vocational Rehab pitched in and helped with the finishing touches with her shop front including air conditioners, strobe doorbells and digital hearing aids to accommodate the use of both clippers and other noises. Mackenzie is involved with the K9s for Warriors program in Ponte Vedra.  She gives back to this organization by grooming any of their foster puppies free of charge.

When she started dog grooming we got together with Denis Oliverio and he has been close to us ever since. At that time he was working for K-9s for Warriors and when she volunteered to help at the facility, he just made her a part of their family at K-9s. He has since become a member of our family and when Hurricane Matthew was headed toward St. Augustine Steve was pretty bad off after the chemo and radiation. I called Denis and told him I didn't think I could get us all boarded up without help. The very next evening he brought a convoy of about 15 veterans to help and they boarded this house within a couple of hours. Mackenzie has been working with K-9s for Warriors every since and also knows about Steve's time serving in Vietnam so she is all about veterans!

Pat Richard is a certified Master Tech. He has over 14 years experience working on cars. In 2018 he and his wife, Kat, decided to open their own auto repair shop. The believe in affordable, reliable, and honest auto repairs. Pat's father served in Vietnam and is a retired Chicago police officer. Kat comes from a largely military family. They both love gardening for the peace and joy of growing their own food. Having witnessed firsthand the struggles of returning/retiring military and through seeing the lack of resources for our veterans it has become a passion to help where they can. They have a small garden at the shop and actively trade plants and seeds with their customers.

2020 Garden Application

Through an application process to qualified veterans, both active duty and retired, we afford scholarships for this garden project. For 2019 we chose 6 applicants and have been installing a 4x8 raised garden at their homes. Our goal is to raise enough money over the next several years to provide a raised bed every week of the year. That would be 52 beds for veterans to cultivate food for themselves as well as the community. We also offer a wheelchair accessible bed option. By getting outdoors, close to their comfort zone, and re-engaging with the local community, veterans will have the opportunity to grow their relationships and also harvest healthy nutritious food at the same time. Each raised bed will come with tools, seeds, education and support to successfully and sustainably help the veteran grow their own food right at home with their families.
