Second Sunday after Pentecost

Proper 7
What is a Demon?

In this week's gospel, Jesus heals a man possessed by a legion of demons.  With our modern sensibilities, we may read this story and imagine this man suffers from a mental illness, not demonic possession.  If we read it that way, we need to be careful not to miss the point that this story has good news for us in it, whether we consider ourselves suffering from a mental illness or not.  Christ heals this person and he is restored to health, to his right mind.

I am certainly not always in my right mind--who among us is?  Lots of forces can throw us off the balance beam.  Maybe it's a mental health problem, maybe it's a challenging person in your life, maybe you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed.  Or maybe the forces that want to destroy love  -- which we can clearly observe around us, whatever name we give them -- find their ways into our minds and take root there.  We might experience this as a habitual pattern of negative thinking or an ugly message we routinely say to ourselves.  So much junk can float around in our heads!  The good news is that we can always call on Jesus to clean us out, to remove what doesn't belong, so that we can live peacefully in the knowledge and love of God.

Many thanks for supplying meals for the Dingmans!
You may pickup your clean serving dishes in the church office.
To learn more about the Agape Team, please contact Fr. Hugh

Healing Ministry

After two years without the possibility of having the service of healing prayers offered by parishioners to those coming forward during Communion, we would like to ask for volunteers to please let the office and Fr. Hugh know of your desire to serve in this capacity.

Become a Saturday Docent
In pre-pandemic summers, we would open the church on Saturdays and have a parishioner (or two) serve as docents to introduce Emmanuel to visitors and answer any questions. If you served previously and feel called again to serve or if you are interested in this ministry, please sign up in the parish office or contact Karen in the church office or Fr. Hugh.
Housing Need for our Custodian, Tim Webster

The house that he is renting is being sold and he will need to vacate before the end of August.  He will consider a 2-bedroom house (prefers a 3 bedroom) to rent. He will consider housesitting for the long term.
We want to keep Tim on island and as our custodian. Please let Tim or Kathi or Bill know if you have any leads.

Happy News from the Tucker Family

Effie writes: Calder had his first follow-up with the neurosurgery team at Seattle Children’s today (6/15). They said his brain is looking the way they want it to at the moment, so they’re keeping his shunt adjusted just the way it is. He even slept through his MRI, which was amazing!

Louise writes: Cailin just graduated from Orcas Island High School last Saturday. Whew! It’s been an eventful few weeks! We continue to be grateful for the love and prayers of our Emmanuel family. ❤️

Father/Mother God, when our souls fill with heaviness, we put our trust in you. We pray for the sick, the injured, the anxious, the grieving, the depressed, the confused, the despairing, the angry, and the fearful. Relieve their strife and worry.  Be especially with friends and family we now name (long pause), including those on our parish prayer list.… Challen…

Let us pray for those celebrating birthdays this week:O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants Lynn Baker (6/14), Sally Elliman (6/15), Tammy Myers (6/15), Marilyn Parman (6/15) as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all
the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Let us pray for those celebrating anniversaries this week:Grant, O God, in your compassion, that Jim & Lindalena
Dingman (6/12) and Tom & Diane Keller-Batter (6/14),
having taken each other in marriage, and affirming again
the covenant which they have made, may grow in

Altar Flower Donations in 2022
Flowers in our holy worship spaces are a beautiful gift to God and those who attend services at Emmanuel as well as those being honored or remembered. Want to contribute?  You can now sign-up to donate the altar flowers in memory or in prayer of a loved one for a specific Sunday starting in 2022. We thank Vicki Clancy for organizing this and the flower guild for ensuring beautiful arrangements on the altar. You can sign-up using the "flower binder" located in the narthex of the Church. The payment envelopes and donation box are also there.
For those attending Church virtually, you can contact the parish office via email to provide the information needed and make arrangements for your donation online here.

Fr. Berto is on sabbatical until August 14
He will return to Emmanuel on August 14th, the 8thanniversary of the beginning of our ministry together.
We believe God works in the lives of those who love him. We trust that in this sabbatical time, God will be at work in Berto’s life, and the lives of Hugh and all of us the people of Emmanuel, using all things for the good of this community. We entrust Berto to God's care, for God's good works, and rich blessings. With joy, we will remember Berto in our hearts for these three months, praying that God will refresh you in body, renew you in mind, and refill your heart with the depths of God's love for you. AMEN.
