SUNDAY TIMES REVIEW

"With each dive Claire and Klaas make, Burger creates an atmosphere and tone so textured, lush and alive that it is as if the reader is beside them: tasting the salt, smelling the kelp, witnessing the sea life, all while experiencing the feel of the water's might and gentle caress.

'The descriptive and characterisation genius of John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway have played a big role in shaping my writing style,' says Burger. As influential as these authors may have been, Burger has created a novel that embodies a vivid writing style of its own."

STORY OF THE FLYLEAF DUGONG

The very last page (aka the flyleaf) of SHE DOWN THERE features an image of me freediving alongside a Mozambiquan dugong. The photograph was taken by Lukas "Waterman" Mueller. As readers will know dugongs, and the myths linked to these vegan mammals, are important to the story. LOCKDOWN READER STORIES

Shortly after the book launched on the 2nd Feb 2020 (a palindrome day), two readers sent me pics of themselves with the book. And as COVID-19 lockdown hit all around the world the idea was born to ask readers to share their personal stories and to give shout-outs to those who needed it - especially creatives. So far I have shared 20 fascinating, often inspiring, stories on FaceBook. More to come ... Insta to follow.
