 April 2022 Edition

Dear Readers,
Welcome to my book column! I’m thrilled to be a part of the Fort Branch and Haubstadt Library family and share my love of books. I was an elementary school teacher for 20+ years and loved using books as a springboard for lessons.  Books have influenced my life from a young age.  My mom subscribed me to the Weekly Reader monthly book club. One of my favorites that still graces my shelves is, "One Kitten for Kim" by Adelaide Holl. It has names and numbers written inside the book as I used to play library with my books, foreshadowing, maybe??

Spring Fever  by Mary Kay Andrews

I picked this book up to read during Spring Break.  I was looking for a light read with minimal characters to keep track of.  It fit the bill!  It’s a story of a small town girl that goes off to the big city to leave behind bad memories of a marriage gone wrong. She is drawn back into the small North Carolina town for her ex-husband’s wedding. Of course, nothing good can come out of that, right? Some family secrets and small town drama weave a nice little love story. If you want a fun, quick, and easy read, check this one out today. I rate this book with 2 Bookmarks.

The Story Keeper by Lisa Wingate

What is a slush pile?  For those of us unfamiliar, in the literary world, it is a stack of unread, unsolicited manuscripts from aspiring novelists.  Jen Gibbs is a New York editor that discovers a manuscript mysteriously put on her desk from the slush pile at her new job.  The manuscript is a story of Sarra, a young mixed-race woman trapped in Appalachia at the turn of the twentieth century.  The similarity to Jen’s past, also a child of the Appalachia, takes her on a journey that will change her life forever.  The dueling stories of Jen and her quest to find who is teasing her with the manuscript and Sarra’s many struggles interweave beautifully.  Lisa Wingate never disappoints as she sprinkles in historical events that pique my interest and force me to do extra research on my own.  I rate this book with 1 Bookmark.
