Rail Pollution Protection Pittsburgh (RP3) and a group of other Allegheny County grassroots organizations that advocate for clean air have, with the help of the BREATHE Project, organized a virtual town hall at 12:00 noon on April 6th (see invite below) to launch an advocacy campaign seeking redress for the ongoing air pollution that erodes the quality of life in our region. This effort seeks to assemble a racially, economically and geographically diverse coalition of residents and elected officials for this effort. Please join us on April 6th. We Pittsburghers take pride in living in the “city that reinvented itself.” Gone are the days of “Smoky City,” where street lights had to be turned on at noon. Now it’s a city defined by its service sector, high-tech and start-ups and it’s a university town with world-class healthcare. It is one of the “Best Places to Live in America,” according to oft-cited PR.

But while the smoke is gone, the toxic air is not...

The American Lung Association gives us an “F” for ozone and fine particle pollution. Air pollution is linked to cancers and respiratory diseases. We are also one of the worst American cities for childhood asthma. Communities of color, and those disproportionately impacted, suffer from proximity to the greatest sources of pollution, with increased risk of disease and lower life expectancy. A public/private partnership transformed our city when smoke and soot made seeing across the street a challenge. Today, when the pollution is less visible, top leaders remain silent.
