BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE SHELL PLASTIC PLANT
AND EDGAR THOMSON
Join us for our next virtual grassroots resident-led air quality town hall, "Under the Toxic Umbrella of Shell and U.S. Steel," Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 6 p.m. via Zoom.
In the 1985 science fiction movie, Back to the Future, a teenager is sent back in time 30 years and is faced with the possibility of preventing his parents from marrying, which would eliminate his own existence.
The residents of our region will be living our own “back to the future” experience when the Shell Plastic Cracker Plant, which will manufacture a million tons of plastic pellets per year while absorbing a $1.7 billion state subsidy, comes online, 147 years after the opening of what is today the U. S. Steel the Edgar Thomson Steel Works that has been spewing toxic air pollution since then.
Our agenda for this Town Hall will include a presentation from a senior scientist at the Clean Air Task Force (CATF), those with key information and experience relating to the Edgar Thomson and Shell facilities, and a physician who will address the health impact of actual and expected levels of air pollution from these facilities.
As always, we will conclude the Town Hall with an open discussion period. Let’s not leave our health and well-being to empty assurances from our worst polluters. Together we can make a difference!
