UNFPA/The Global Media Campaign agree direct support for local FGM activists in
The Gambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Ethiopia, Mali and Guinea 
Over 500 media activists,  religious leaders and local journalists now involved in the media campaigns forged during COVID-19.  "I am glad that we are partnering with GMC to reach out to local campaigners with Direct Action Media Grants- this is one of the most important ways to end FGM by 2030- reaching into and empowering the local communities,"   said Mireille Tushiminina, Coordinator of UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on FGM

Nigeria

Sierra Leone

GMC media activists in Sierra Leone are stepping up their FGM campaigns in May and June to engage influential Paramount Chiefs in ending FGM to mark the Day of African Child on June 16th. The new push comes as the President of Sierra Leone, Jukiys Maada Bio (above) told Sierra Leone’s first Town Hall Meeting that:  “ To ban FGM outright would be political  suicide.”
