District of Sooke Official Community Plan
Transition Sooke Supports the Draft OCP
At Transition Sooke’s recent regular monthly meeting on April 6, the OCP and Climate Action Team reported its recent thinking on the OCP:
Transition Sooke supports the District of Sooke’s new Official Community Plan and we would like to see it passed by Sooke Council as soon as possible.
Transition Sooke believes there has been more than adequate engagement with the Sooke community on the Official Community Plan.
Transition Sooke is concerned that recent changes to the Official Community Plan are diluting its strength to address the community’s climate change challenges.
Transition Sooke eagerly anticipates the District of Sooke’s Climate Action Plan as it will be an integral part of the planning structure and should ensure that growth and development in the District of Sooke are in line with its greenhouse gas emissions goal.
The District of Sooke will give the OCP first reading on April 11, followed by a public open house on May 7.
An Invitation from the District of Sooke
The public is invited to join Council for an open house to discuss the draft OCP, the guiding land use document for the district. WHEN: Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. WHERE: Sooke Community Hall, lower meeting room, 2037 Shields Road
If you can't attend in person, send your thoughts to the District.
All municipal policies, plans and regulations must be in alignment with the OCP. An OCP review is an opportunity for the District to ensure that the goals and objectives remain relevant. The review has been underway for 18-months and is approaching the final phase of engagement before proceeding to adoption.
Can you Help at the Repair Café?
Are you a fixer? A mender of brokenthings? Do you think that repairing damaged household items rather than junking them makes sense? If so, Zero Waste Sooke could use your expertise for our Repair Cafes.
If you’d like to volunteer 4 hours on a Saturday several times a year to help folks repair items that they might otherwise bring to the landfill. then contact Bernie Klassen, keeper of the Zero Waste Sooke Repair Cafe “fixer list” or Jo Phillips.
We always appreciate fixers of:
- electrical appliances
- electronic equipment
- furniture and wooden items
- clothing
- small engines
- crockery
- a sharpener of blades
Zero Waste Sooke is a working group of Transition Sooke and the Repair Cafe operates under license from Repair Cafes International
83% of Canadians agree the planet is warming, but...
Only 60% agree that the warming is human caused and
only 47% think it will harm them personally. Wonder what the 500 people who died from BC's Heat Dome would think about that?
Upcoming Transition Sooke Events
Earth Day is coming April 22, and Transition Sooke will be hosting various events during Earth Week. Look for a Transition Sooke booth on Market Day, as well as a separate 606 Water Group table, and a Repair Cafe on the 30th.
Ongoing Transition Sooke Events

Note Taker for Regular Meetings-- Once again, we are looking for a note-taker for our regular meetings, the first Wednesday of each month. Third time will be the charm! Contact Alan.
Food Security – A few years ago we held a Green New Deal meeting followed by a workshop where we established a number of Action Teams. One of those Teams — Food Security — could really do with some new energy.
