Backyard Food Growing

Transition Sooke along with a number of other groups is involved in an exciting program to help people grow food in their backyards and improve our food security and personal health!

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Fill bags of soil
  • Build raised beds
  • Deliver garden kits
  • Help people get their gardens started
Experienced gardeners are also needed to answer questions and provide guidance to new gardeners.

For more information or if you can help, contact Stephen Hindrichs.

April 22 is Earth Day!

Due to the pandemic, Transition Sooke’s plans for an interactive celebration at the Sooke community hall have been cancelled. But our hearts are still with Mother Earth, as we care for our family, neighbours and friends.
Fifty years ago, on April 22, 1970, twenty million people took to the streets to protest the environmental damage made by humans to Mother Earth. Earth Day launched the modern environmental movement.
Earth Day 2020 was going to be extra-special, extra-urgent. Events were being planned around the world involving over 1 billion people in 190 countries. And then we were hit by COVID-19.
In Sooke, we are seeing the best side of people: neighbours shopping for those in self-isolation; musicians hosting free online events; people cooking free food to distribute to the community; and the nightly 7 o’clock cheer for health care workers.
The kindness and respect that people are expressing to each other is helping to sustain us during this pandemic. And this is exactly what Mother Earth needs too. When this pandemic is over, let’s not return to business as usual.
By working together, not only can we survive the pandemic hitting us today; but we can also tackle climate change to create a better, healthier Mother Earth for generations to come.
An many of you probably already know, there are a number of virtual events lined up for Earth week. Locally in Victoria, Creatively United for the Planet is hosting “EarthFest Live: Creative Solutions for a New World” throughout the week of April 19-25. Go to for more information.
