One Earth-One Ocean: “Sooke Wave Orca Event"

In recognition of World Oceans Day on June 8, the Orca Pod is organizing a “Sooke Wave Orca Event” to show our concern for Social and Climate Justice. The pop-up event will take place from 4-5 pm along  Sooke Road from the Park and Ride station to Tim Horton’s (also known as the EMCS Boulevard).

Stand up for marine animals, including our beloved Southern Resident Orcas and wild salmon. Stand up for our forests that help stabilize the climate. Show our compassion and concern for human rights for all.

Bring your own sign or stand beside an Orca cut-out, which will be placed two metres apart along the road.  Bring a big heart to show respect and appreciation for front line and all workers.

This will be a COVID-19 safe event.  Please wear masks and follow physical distancing guidelines.

Stand up for Social and Climate Justice: make Sooke an environmentally sustainable and racism-free community.

Backyard Gardens:
Action on the Climate Emergency

The Backyard Garden Project, spearheaded by Sooke's Stephen Hindrichs, is a collaboration of Transition Sooke, Sooke Region Food Chi and the Sooke Garden Club.

So far, the project has delivered 100 grow bags and seven raised beds to about 30 families in the Sooke area.

In addition to  $1,000 from Transition Sooke, the project has received $2,000 from Rotary along with donations from the Sooke Garden Club and individuals. Sooke Soil and Landscape  donated two truckloads of soil (10 yards).

There are still funds available and volunteers hope to continue the project into the fall and possibly next year.

For more information, contact Stephen.
