Some days it still feels like summer but don't get caught off guard. Calgary Canoe Club members need to start thinking about changing to winter tires AND shifting to winter training activities.
October 18th - Fall sprint paddlers will start in the swimming pool, even before the official transition to winter. Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:00PM paddlers will be in the University of Calgary Pool.
What a great season it has been. The sprint team numbers where up with Calgarians discovering our secret paradise. Parents looking for safe, outside, and physical distanced activity were lucky to find our team and many have continued into the Fall paddling programs. For many who stay with the club over the colder months, this will be their first winter as paddlers.
Winter activities at the club range from a once a week swim with the U12 age group and progress to 9-12 sessions a week for the senior competitors preparing for Canada Games Team Camps and events, National team Selection events and the National Champs to be held in Ottawa, late in August.
Winter Program Q & A - An informative session for parents will be held (outside) at the Canoe Club on Saturday 9-9:30AM, October 17th while paddlers are getting their gear ready for training. Drop off your athlete and stay for 30min to ask questions, then watch the action.
Saturday morning at the races: The sprint gang normally uses Saturday morning to try and get as much milage in the boats as possible. This week the gang will be mixing it up and have invited the OC paddlers to join the fun. Training will take the form (not strict form) of an ICF marathon race, including portages for the older groups. Paddlers will take part in a mass start (all boats) in front of the club and head north along the shoreline to make a full 4km loop and arrive back at the club. Based on ability athletes will be assigned 5 loops (20km), 4, 3 or 2 loops to complete. Older paddlers will compete a portage with each loop in front of the club.

Looking forward to spring and summer of 2021 -
We continue to plan for a normal season in 2021 and will adapt with the situation. For paddlers only knowing the 2020 program, expect to have the chance to show off our great skill and meet up with paddlers across the province, region and nation for camps and competitions.
Our spring on-water typically starts with the 15+ age group in Florida for spring camp. We don't plan on Florida but there is a good chance we will be tearing up the waters in southern BC over March and April. More information on spring camp plans (tentative as they will be) will be presented as they are put in place.
As of now we fully expect to send a team to the Canada Cup Regatta in Regina, early July as well as older teams to Nova Scotia in June then on to Ottawa for Canada Cup #1 on the July 1st weekend before joining the full team in regina. National Championships set for late August in Ottawa are normally the big finally to summer racing. We have a strong team developing and hope to turn some heads.
** Our team takes pride in creating a friendly, supportive and. competitive culture. Thanks to all athletes and parents and volunteers for the effort this takes, it is worth it **
