Iron Age roundhouse project at Hengistbury Head

Staff and volunteers at Hengistbury Head have been working hard to bring to life a new visitor experience that demonstrates how our ancestors lived on the headland thousands of years ago.

The team has been researching designs for an Iron Age roundhouse to be constructed, subject to future funding and planning approval.

News in brief

Work on Bournemouth Aviary is progressing well, with the 200 birds (who each have a name!) safely rehomed elsewhere while they wait to be transferred to the new larger aviary, which provides more flight space for the birds. Work is expected to finish in the next couple of months.

A new outdoor classroom has opened at Hengistbury Head that will allow schools and colleges to run activities in the surrounding environment to encourage people to get interested in nature. This is a joint partnership between BCP Council and Kingston Maurward College, with £70,000 funding allocated from Dorset LEP.
Thank you to all our volunteers!

Another year has gone by and our open spaces are more beautiful and biodiverse thanks to those who generously give their time and effort to help, despite the challenges faced by Covid-19.

Recently, volunteers helped plant new shrubs at Whitecliff Recreation Ground in Poole (pictured), just one of many days spent working alongside the council and Parks Foundation staff, meaning more can be achieved for all to enjoy.

Across town, Friends of Druitt Gardens in Christchurch are a friendly group who meet twice a week and have recently constructed a small wildlife educational centre to increase visitor awareness and to foster the interest of local school children. They've also planted additional trees and have created a wildflower area. New volunteers are warmly welcomed, please email the Friends of Druitt Gardens to find out more. For general volunteering enquiries across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, please email our Development Officer Sarah.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to all those who've helped in all our parks and open spaces in the last year. Have a peaceful break and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year for more volunteering opportunities!

Merry Christmas from the Parks and Open Spaces team!
