Letter from the Editor:

Hey folx,

Welcome back! Fall break seemed to be well needed across the board, but now we're back and we're hitting that grind!

However, make sure that y'all are still taking care of yourselves, and keep an eye out for a special newsletter next week, for a "finals survival guide."

This is my continuous reminder that everyone at the Sloss Center is a resource to students, faculty, and staff on campus and we will support folx in any way that we can.

We have many community aid and resources to help you navigate through, and are in the process of creating even more opportunities for individuals who visit the Sloss Center. So please feel free to stop by and chat with any of us on the Sloss staff. As well, we have a lot of community aid programming coming up, so keep a look out!

As always, continuous events and programs are happening throughout Iowa State, make sure to stay up to date and join in, meet some amazing individuals, and learn about different identities.

Any additional information about the Sloss Center can be found on our website

If any individuals have any questions about events, programs or community aid, please reach out to me:

In community,

Madison Mason (she/they)
PR and Communications intern.

Campus Rally for Iran

Have you been following the news in Iran? If you’d like to learn more about the current situation in Iran, stop in at Parks Library on Wednesday, November 30, between 11am - 4pm and learn from the Iranian Students and Scholars Association at Iowa State about the current human rights crisis taking place. Across the nation, university students are holding solidarity sessions tomorrow, and our campus community is invited to participate by listening and learning from Iranian students at ISU.

AAUW Start Smart Salary Negotiations Workshop

AAUW Start Smart salary negotiation workshops are specifically designed to teach you how to negotiate salaries for a new job. In every two-hour workshop you will gain confidence in your negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play and learn:

  • How to identify and articulate your personal value
  • How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other strategies to use when negotiating
  • How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits
  • About the wage gap, including its long-term consequences

Negotiations can increase the potential to earn higher salaries and better benefits packages. By negotiating fair and equitable salaries, you will be better able to pay off loans, buy the things you want and need, and even save (though it may seem like it is far away) for retirement.

Upcoming workshop dates:

Friday, December 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST

Wednesday, February 8, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. CST

Friday, April 7, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST

Register here for the first workshop on December 2.

Land Acknowledgement

As we come back from the holidays, specifically a holiday like Thanksgiving, that has a colonial background, it's important to unpack the historical significance and harmful nature of the holiday.

Take time to acknowledge the land that we walk on is not our land, but that it belongs to the Native American's who came before us, and it still belongs to Indigenous communities who reside in Iowa today.

Join and support local Native and Indigenous groups! The United Native American Student Association is a student organization here at Iowa State. Follow their Instagram to stay up to date on their meetings and events!
