Laurel Awards 2018

This year Jewish Family Services’ Holocaust Survivor Support program was nominated for a Laurel Award from Duncan Craig LLP. Since 1994 this award has honored non-profit organizations for their exceptional creativity and innovation. Although we did not win this award, it was a great honor to take a place among the 52 outstanding nominees.

The Holocaust Survivor Support Program will continue providing home support, practical assistance, case management, and education in its unique individualized and client tailored manner to help its clients to be their best selves and to celebrate and honor their lives in Edmonton’s diverse community.

JFS presents the Sigma Alpha Mu
2018 Scholarship grant

Each year JFS awards a Sigma Alpha Mu scholarship grant from a fund it administers that was set up to support Jewish Students studying at the University of Alberta. This year’s recipient was Michal Shaposhnikov who is a full time BSc Chemistry Student and is about to start her third year and has ambitions to advance her studies into Pharmacology and Chemistry fields in further degrees. She is heavily involved in the local Jewish community and has recently become the President of Hillel.

Michal writes “I am so grateful and honored the Jewish family services chose me as the recipient of the Sigma Alpha Mu scholarship. I am so excited to begin this new school year, and look forward to giving back to the Jewish community as much as possible through Hillel and other organizations. My Judaism is a huge part of my identity, and being an active member of the Edmonton Jewish Community is of high importance to me.”

She is pictured receiving her Scholarship grant with Judi Card President of the JFS Board and Robert Mitchell Executive Director of JFS.

Chanukah is right around the corner and Jewish Family Services is looking for volunteers to cook, package and deliver dinners to our Seniors around the city.
