Meet a Family Leader- Lisa Wadden

We have 2 sons who have both received excellent care at CHEO.

Our youngest son, Luke, is 7 years old and has 2 syndromes - Down syndrome and a seizure disorder called West syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy). Luke's seizures did not respond to medications but they are extremely well controlled by the ketogenic diet which is supported by our amazing dietician and neurology team. Like many children with Down syndrome, Luke was born with a heart defect called a PDA which was repaired at CHEO via cardiac catheterization when he was 6 months old. Luke was also born with a kidney defect called hydronephrosis. In caring for Luke our family has been supported by many departments at CHEO/OCTC including the following - Down syndrome clinic, neurology, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, ENT, Audiology, Dentistry, infectious disease, RSV clinic, emergency medicine, general surgery, discharge planning, phlebotomy, nursing, CHEO volunteers, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and the seating and mobility clinic.

Our oldest son, James, is 12 years old and has also had many visits to the CHEO Emergency department. James is a very active and athletic boy and had 3 concussions in one year as well as a nasty abdominal injury from a bike accident which required monitoring by the CHEO surgery team. James has participated in 2 research studies at CHEO about concussions. James also has anaphylactic food allergies so we are very grateful to have CHEO in Ottawa.

* Lisa is currently a Research Project Advisor on a Sleep Apnea Research Project.

A note from the Family Leader Program Coordinator about COVID-19

First and foremost, I hope each of you and your family are well. I will continue to send the ENGAGE newsletter every second Sunday to you; however you may additionally get email updates from time to time as the situation continues to evolve.

What does this mean for Family Leaders?

If you are an Advisor on a research project, all person to person meetings are cancelled.  Please work with the contact on your research project to make the meeting virtual/teleconference.  As usual, please continue to keep me looped in on your work as an Advisor.

If you are a Reviewer on a project, good news- we can still do review via a hyperlink from home.  If you are interested/able to continue to do project review, I will send it your way in the coming weeks. We do have some review work live right now.

If you are PFAC member, we will continue to meet on the first Monday of the month, but these meetings will be via Teleconference/ Zoom. More details to follow.

Most importantly, I wish you all good health.  My family and I cut our trip down south short and arrived home on Tuesday March 17 .  We are now in quarantine for 14 days. I will continue to keep in touch with you from time to time. My earlier email had my personal cell phone listed, please use that number to call or text me anytime.

As always, lets keep our health and our families our main priority.

Take good care,

- Michelle
