What does 2020 hold in store?

Challenges, certainly. South Africa welcomed the new year with a World Bank forecast downgrade and a new wave of load shedding. Not quite the start to the decade that we wanted but this had me thinking about Optima and the Kitchen Manufacturing Industry in general and one word popped up:

The ability to avoid wasting materials, energy, efforts, money, and time in doing something or in producing a desired result.

South Africans are resilient, we know how to make a plan and adapt. So my wish for both Optima and the country as a whole is that through all of these challenges, we adjust our way of thinking and working and we develop brilliant solutions. Take a look at one of our projects below where we took this approach in order to develop a beautiful and efficient home space.

Let’s do more with less.

Here's to 2020.

The focus right now is to maximise what one has available to them. Below are some examples from one of our recent projects:

Smaller well allocated and planned spaces. (Use of drawers on base units, pull-outs on tall units)

Multifunctional spaces such as breakfast bars that can be used as a place to congregate in the home and do some office tasks, homework, study, cook and eat together.

Back to nature with the use of natural materials. Timber floors and cladding, pot plants and herbs, textured leather and stone.

Natural gas for cooking, solar panels with energy-efficient appliances and battery backup for lighting.

Ready for a home refresh? Try these five on-trend furnishing styles.

Our latest project in Craighall Park took much of this future-focused thinking into consideration during the design and installation process. Here are a few photos from the project.

We up-cycled the client's previous island top into a new design, and incorporated the book and wine rack. Instead of scrapping, the existing kitchen units were installed in the scullery.

We used satin-sprayed door finishes to enhance the natural light in the kitchen and offset it with the black Gola handles system. The natural Kiaat timber softens the tone and provides warmth.

The eco-friendly Caesarstone raw concrete tops provide the ultimate blend of style, durability and sustainability thanks to their use of quartz.

Our clients have loved the feather-light glide of Blum's soft-close drawers and hinges for years. They offer full extension, making it easy to access the back of the unit easily. The centre island, prep area and integrated fridges link the cooking triangle and, incorporating the Blum Dynamic space principle, the kitchen becomes seamless to navigate.

The integrated Liebherr Fridge and Freezer not only after A++ efficiency ratings but the elegant lines match perfectly with the kitchen's aesthetic. The SoftSystem closure damping system is comfortable and highly practical in everyday use.

The same considerations were used in selecting the integrated Siemens Dishwasher. Again, the style suits the kitchen design but, more importantly, it also boasts an  A++ energy rating thanks due to its low water usage, large space and ability to complete a wash cycle in a third of the time of other washers.

The Smeg eye-level gas oven and 90cm free-standing gas cooker mean there's no impact on dinner when load shedding strikes. Couple that with the home's intelligent solar and battery backup and you have a house that remains homely even when the grid is down.

The Blanco Natural prep sink and mixer provide perfect interplay between the mixer and sink with Blanco’s seal of approval for safety and hygiene.
