I do apologize, but if I'm the one writing these, you're going to get bad puns left and right.  "August" is from the Latin meaning "majestic," and I know lots of us have grand knitting plans for the month.  Personally, I'd like to knit a Ceciliana shawl, and maybe finish up a few WIPs, like my Magical Thinking or my Hedgerow.  And of course, many of us are already looking toward fall even though it's about a million degrees here in Los Alamos today--the kids go back to school in just a few weeks, and autumn will be upon us before we know it.  Send yourself "back to school" by learning a new skill or technique with us (and check out the class schedule at the bottom of the newsletter).

Thanks for learning along with us,

Mary and the CKYC Board
We have lots of new yarn to share with you in August.  First up is Whisper Lace, a 70% wool/30% silk blend from Universal Yarn. This versatile laceweight is an incredible bargain at $9.00 for 100g and comes in 14 solid colors. (It also comes in variegated colors, which we're happy to special order.)  One skein makes a beautiful scarf; two makes a lovely shawl--several of our knitters are making Semele shawls with Whisper Lace at the moment.

Next, thanks to our continued collaboration with local artisan Stephanie Hagelberg, we're happy to bring you Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece.  Cotton Fleece is a lightweight blend of 80% cotton, 20% wool, and perfect for summer knitting and back-to-school kid clothing.  Co-op member Wendy says her kids always requested their sweaters be made from Cotton Fleece!

And yet another new yarn for you!  Cotton Supreme is a worsted-weight 100% cotton yarn, perfect for summer garments and baby items. It's an economical choice at $9.00 per 100 gram/180 yard skein and can be machine-washed and -dried!  We have twenty gorgeous colors, which also coordinate with the multi-colored Cotton Supreme Batiks.  I'm knitting a Beanpole Cardi with colorways Anemone and Dusk.  (Whoops, did I forget to put that on the WIP list above?)

My other new project for the fall (I have a problem) is a Medina Mosaic Tiles blanket.  I'm using Cascade Ultra Pima, and I invite you all to crochet along with me!  Several victims, er, other crocheters have already joined me.  Come figure it out along with us.  If crochet isn't your scene, we've restocked the popular 60 Quick Cotton Knits book from Cascade, which has 60 knitting patterns using Ultra Pima.  Either way, we're happy to have you work on your preferred craft at open stitching group, which meets from 4:30-7:30 on Thursday nights, and 2-5 on August 3, 17, and 31st, all Saturdays.

I just couldn't decide this month.  We had so many great FFOs come into the store, I elected to show you four of them!  Clockwise from the top: Celeste is wearing a tunic of her own pattern in Mesa Roja yarn custom-dyed just for her!  Suzy is getting back into knitting after a long hiatus, so she chose to knit a simple baby blanket for the Linus Project in Cascade Yarns Cherub Chunky.  Janet made her beautiful Open Summer Cardigan from Classic Shades Sequins Lite in the "Rainforest" colorway.  None of us could get over how gorgeous this came out.  Good work, Janet!  And last--but not least!--Wendy improvised a Bamboo Pop tank top in the Watermelon Dots colorway.  We have such creative and talented crafters at CKYC!

Here's what's coming up in August and September.  Our class schedule changes often in response to real life, and we add new classes all the time.  Make sure you're up-to-date by checking the website: or Facebook page:  To sign up for a class, call the store during business hours, send an email, reach out via Facebook message, or come on by.  Remember that CKYC subscribers get a 20% discount on all class fees and that classes with no enrollees 48 hours before class start will be canceled
