Blessed
Church on the Block has been building relationships with social service agencies in the area including the Puerto Rican Community Center. The center serves as a free daycare for kids ages 3 to 5 who come from very poor working families or families in crisis situations. In addition, they have social workers there to assist and support the families in tangible ways.
As a ministry, our church wanted to sponsor several families for Christmas and purchase Christmas gifts for the children. When we approached our church members, they jumped at the idea. Bear in mind, most of our congregants are in the same financial situation as the families they are helping. Within a week, most of them purchased gifts with what little money they have and we soon had enough gifts to support fifteen children from three different families. When Tony and Debbie Palumbo visited the social worker at the community center to bring the gifts, they also told her of our desire to help someone there who was in desperate need. While they were relaying this, there happened to be a young single mother of two at the community center who recently lost her job and her car. Her car was towed the week before and it was accruing enormous daily costs. The woman was not able to pay and the car went into auction. Tony and Debbie were in the right place at the right time - the desperate need was ten feet away from them. Because of your generous support we were able to pay the tow company off and get her car out of auction the following day. The best part is that this woman with two small children, found a job that same week!
