Last weekend, with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we concluded a significant portion of the church year which included the Seasons of Advent and Christmas.  We have now returned to the Season of the Church Year designated as Ordinary Time.

The title does not intend to suggest ordinary in the sense of mundane or unimportant, but rather because the weeks are marked in a numerical progression with ordinal numbers. Thus we are currently in the First Week in Ordinary Time.  Ordinary Time in the church calendar comprises 34 sequential weeks, though it is interrupted by others seasons and special events including Lent, the Paschal Triduum and Easter.
PARISH HAPPENINGS
  • New altar server training for children (grades 4 and up) and adults will begin after the 10am Mass this Sunday, January 17.
  • The Laudato Sí discussion group led by Sr. Maryanne Zakreski, SSJ now meets on Fridays after the 10am Mass in our Parish Community Room. All are welcome!
  • 2020 contribution statements will be available later this month.  Email the parish office to request one.
  • We are asking everyone to bring a can of soup to church on "Souper Bowl Sunday" which is Sunday, February 7. The donations will be delivered to the Food Bank at St. Helena Church at 5th Street and Godfrey Avenue.

In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Patris Corde ("With a Father's Heart"), Pope Francis describes St. Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.

The letter marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX's declaration of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To celebrate the anniversary, Pope Francis has proclaimed a special "Year of St. Joseph," that began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) 2020 and extending to the same feast in 2021.

May this be a year of great grace for all of us as we more deeply entrust ourselves to the care of our spiritual father and our parish patron. St. Joseph, pray for us!

PRO-LIFE ACTIVITIES
In the Catholic Church in the United States, January 22nd is designated as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.”  As Catholics, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and/or giving alms.  On this 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we mourn the many children’s lives ended by abortion and remember in prayer those who suffer the aftermath.  The Church comes together today to pray for the protection of all unborn children and to make reparation for abortion, trusting that the Lord hears our prayers.
