Occidental Community Church family,

Last Sunday morning I went early (7:30 am) to Pleasant Hill Christian School to see what the weather was like.  I was unsure whether or not we should meet for our church service after the lightning storm earlier that morning.  It didn't take long to find out.  As I stood on the blacktop where we meet I saw lightning strikes all around me and the rain began to fall.  God was giving me my answer!   I made the decision to cancel our church service.  It was too risky and too wet to meet.

Hours earlier Sue and I were standing outside our house marveling at the freak lightning storm that had come into Sonoma County.   At that time we were not thinking of the fires that might result from this dramatic heavenly display!  But now we have come through a week of fires all around us caused by this lightning.  We are praying that you are all safe and unharmed by the fires.

As of today (Friday),  we are planning to meet this Sunday at our usual time at the school.  We do not expect the weather to turn bad, but if more fires start up and evacuation warnings are put out that affect us, I will send out an email if we need to cancel services again.

The prophet Isaiah wrote to the nation of Israel when they were going through a frightening time.  He reminded them of the greatness and compassion of God:
Isaiah 43:1-3
1. But now, this is what the Lord says - He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel;  "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.  2. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  3. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior!"

We have been battling the coronavirus pandemic for most of the year now.  The wildfires bring a new threat.  These are frightening times for us.  But whatever comes our way we can be confident that we have a God watching over us who is greater than all the threats we face.  As Isaiah here reminds Israel, "He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel" (v. 1) is the very one who is also protecting you.

I am looking forward to worshipping this awesome God with you this Sunday!
