All the parents who filled out the YMCA application for afterschool. It is long!!! But having the YMCA run our programs has led to a lot more clarity and structure than past years.

What's Happening at 131?
131中学正在进行什么?
Something new at 131 this year are Community Circles. Every Friday, 6-10 students and one adult get together for a period in a Community Circle. The purpose of these circles are to provide a safe place to share and learn about each other, focusing on topics that often get overlooked in class. We'll explore how to be better and more supportive friends, how to accept differences among people and how to help lift people up and not put them down.
There are a few parts of a circle that are important. There is a talking piece to ensure everyone's voice is heard. We sit in a circle, allowing everyone to have an equal place in the group. We have a curriculum to follow that allows us all to develop a common language.
After the first two weeks, the response from students and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. As one 7th grade student shared with me, "I didn't think my teacher liked me in math class because, but in our circle I realized that she was actually really nice and believed in me."
