LAST DAY to join Incite Magazine's '21-22 Team!

There are less than 8 hours left to sign up to join our volunteer team for this school year! Applications, accessible at incitemagazine.ca/apply, are due at 11:59PM EST.

Est. 1997, Incite Magazine is McMaster University’s independent arts and culture publication featuring personal essays, fiction, poetry, commentary, research, interviews, sketches, photography, paintings, digital art, and more. We aim to foster the growth of a creative community promoting self-expression, collaboration, and dialogue within our university campus and city of Hamilton.

Every aspect of Incite’s writing, graphics, layout, video, and event production is carried out by our wonderful student volunteers. And now we're looking for more friends to join us in our creative cause!

Getting involved with Incite is a great way to meet new people, contribute to our greater campus community, and develop skills of all kinds that can be incredibly useful down the road. Creating connections feels especially important right now, and we can't think of a better way of doing so than relishing in the creative arts together as a volunteer team!
As a reminder, the open general volunteer positions include:
  • Content Editors, who are collectively responsible for vetting all the writing in a finished issue of Incite by working one-on-one with student contributors.

  • Art Managers, who curate student artwork and produce original artwork for each issue based on its theme and Incite’s brand.
  • Layout Editors, who apply technical expertise with Adobe InDesign to create spreads for each issue.
We're also looking for two new members for our Editorial Board, which is the leadership team that oversees the overall direction of the publication.
  • The Communications Director is in charge of maintaining Incite's online and on-campus promotional presence. They respond to emails and direct messages, update Incite's website (currently hosted on Wix), oversee all of Incite’s social media output, create promotional materials, and send out regular emails and community posts updating Incite staff, contributors, and readers on matters such as submission deadlines and upcoming events.

  • The Events Director is responsible for organizing events, socials, workshops, and other outreach initiatives aimed at engaging with and uniting McMaster students through the creative arts. Past programming has included coffeehouses, paint nights, writing circles, and digital pictionary. Launch parties for new issues are also planned by the Events Director. Regular duties include developing initiative ideas, communicating with venues and caterers (if in-person), communicating with collaborating community partners, coordinating staff attendance, and other logistical tasks.
To apply for any of these positions, please download the application document from incitemagazine.ca/apply and submit your completed application (with the question responses and any relevant attachments) to incitemagazine@gmail.com by the end of the day.

All McMaster students are encouraged to apply, including incoming first years. No prior experience with Incite is expected or required. As well, our Editorial Board will prioritize racialized folks, 2SLGBTQIA+, and folks with disabilities in the hiring process.

We look forward to reading your application!

McMaster sits on the traditional territory shared between the Haudenosaunee confederacy and the Anishinabe nations, which was acknowledged in the Dish with One Spoon wampum belt. That wampum uses the symbolism of a dish to represent the territory, and one spoon to represent that the people are to share the resources of the land and only take what they need.
