2019 was a HUGE year from for us. We grew our team from two to thirty-two; hosted more events than we thought possible,; completed creating the first-ever digital catalogue of the books and items housed at the McMillan Memorial Libraries and hosted our first annual gala. During which, we received the best news ever...
At the beginning of the year, we set out to host approximately 10 events as part of our Public Events at McMillan series. The response to our call for applications was great, and as a result, we wound up hosting 21 events at all three branches in the CBD, Eastlands (Makadara) and Kaloleni!
More public events in 2020? We hope so! Please look out for our call for applications going out in the early part of the year.
A major goal for 2019 was to create a catalogue of all the books, journals, newspapers and other items housed in these libraries.
The librarians estimated that approximately 400,000 items are located across the three branches. Our team of six interns (which grew to 23 in the final weeks of this process), have now successfully logged a total of 90,954 individual items. We're delighted to announce that the first-ever McMillan Memorial Library digital catalogue is now complete!
A hearfelt THANK YOU to the 80 individual donors who made contributions to our GlobalGiving campaign, equipping us with resources that made it possible to reach our target and complete this important task!
What next? Now, we will begin to review the catalogue and work with the librarians to determine which books leave the library and which ones stay behind, both in digital and physical formats.
These libraries are shifting lives all over Nairobi in the smallest most inclusive ways. Here is our year in numbers...

We are delighted to announce that the Kaloleni branch of the McMillan Memorial Library will close on 20th December 2019 for full restoration! Please stay tuned in January 2020 for more information about this particular project, its ambitions, partners and more. Exciting times ahead!

Presenting the best news ever!

Last week, during our inaugural fundraising gala, we received a most wonderful and unexpected pledge from Sharjah World Book Capital 2019, committing funds required for the restoration of the McMillan Memorial Library on Banda Street!

This great news was delivered by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, CEO of Kalimat Group (our gala's premium sponsor) and Vice President of the International Publishers Association (IPA).
In late October our founders attended the Sharjah International Book Fair, where Book Bunk became a recipient of a share of the Africa Publishing Innovation Fund. This fund granted a total of $170,000 to seven publishing-related projects across Africa on 29th October 2019. The fund was created following an MOU between Dubai Cares and the International Publishers Association (IPA). Book Bunk will receive $50,000 for the restoration of the Kaloleni branch of the McMillan Memorial Library, as well as book donations valued at approximately $10,000.

Stay tuned for more on this exciting front!
This year you have indulged our experiments, listened to our vision and showed up time and again to support Book Bunk's vision for Nairobi's public libraries. We are grateful and feel seen, validated and carried by your support.

See you at the library in 2020!!!
