April 2022
Dear Community Members,

With Passover just one week away, we would like to wish you and your families a Passover rich with meaning as we remember the Exodus from Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. As we recall the bitter experience of our ancestors who were once slaves, we are also reminded of those who are bitterly suffering in the world today.

Yesterday, two more people were killed in another violent terrorist attack in Israel, the fourth of its kind in just over two weeks. This is an addition to the 11 Israelis who were killed in previous attacks that have shaken the country and left many wounded. We pray for a speedy recovery for those injured and mourn those who lost their lives. May their memories be for a blessing.

As the crisis in Ukraine crosses the one-month mark, we continue to look for ways in which we can assist Jewish people affected by the war. To date, we have raised $183,727 through the Ukraine Emergency Relief Fund which has been helping our partners on the front lines of the conflict. To meet the evolving needs of those affected, the Fund will also be expanded to help resettle Ukrainians who arrive here as they begin to start the next chapter of their lives in Manitoba, surrounded by the warmth and support of our community.

The generosity of our community has also been evident through your remarkable support of the Combined Jewish Appeal. We are pleased to report that the 2021-2022 CJA Campaign closed after raising an incredible $6,201,200 for our community. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the donors and canvassers who made the campaign a true success. Thank you to our campaign team, led by CJA Chair Adam Levene, Top Donor Chair Carrie Shenkarow, Women’s Philanthropy Co-Chairs Paula Parks and Gayla Guttman, Lion of Judah Committee members Marla Levene, Marie Vickar and Jessica Kraut, and Ben-Gurion Society Co-Chairs Michael and Ellie Silver.

Due to the pandemic, we were forced to postpone our annual Kavod Evening awards ceremony in 2020. We are pleased to announce that our 2020 award winners as well the 2022 Kavod award recipients will be recognized for their dedication to our community on May 31, 2022 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
