November 2021
Dear Community Members,

A question I get from time to time, especially since the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas, is: how does our Federation support Israel? In this month’s message, I would like to share some initiatives that our Federation supports which help to make a meaningful difference in the day-to-day lives of Israelis.

I strongly believe that Jewish people are not just connected to each other but are responsible for each other. Since our Federation’s founding more than 80 years ago, our community has been deeply committed to Israel and its people, standing in solidarity with them during times of peace and in times of conflict. This relationship has evolved over time, from supporting Jews in need, to the building of mutually beneficial relationships that strengthen us collectively.

To that end, we are proud of the strong relationship we’ve developed with Israel through Partnership 2Gether, whose goal is to establish bridges of understanding between Israeli and Diaspora Jewry. Specifically, this partnership focuses on economic development, fostering co-existence among Israeli Jews and Arabs, education, social services for youth, and leadership development. We have contributed to this partnership through funding that has helped to improve education, security, and health care for the people of the Galilee Panhandle. We collaborate through learning about each other’s communities and projects, sharing our experiences and expertise.

Through our longstanding partnerships with The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, our Federation supports humanitarian assistance, immigrant aid, education, and Jewish identity programs in Israel.

For more than 90 years, JAFI has helped Jews make Aliyah to Israel, and creates social change through mentorship, housing and rehabilitation services for at-risk youth, subsidized housing for the elderly, new immigrants and single-parent families, and support for small-business owners and young activist leaders in target geographies and populations.

In addition, JAFI provides financial and emotional assistance to families in the wake of terror attacks or in times of war. The agency’s Victims of Terror Fund delivers emergency financial aid to Israelis. In the most recent conflict, funds were deployed to help Israelis who suffered the worst of the horrific rocket attacks. This fund provides immediate financial assistance to families whose households have suffered a direct hit, and ensures the safety and security of our people, building long-term resilience among those who are impacted the most.

We also support Israel through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). As the leading global Jewish humanitarian organization, JDC rescues Jews in danger and provides aid to vulnerable Jews around the world, develops innovative solutions to Israel’s most complex social challenges, and leads the Jewish community’s response to global crises like natural disasters, public health emergencies, and more. For over 100 years, JDC’s work has put the timeless Jewish value of mutual responsibility into action, making it essential to the survival of millions of people and the advancement of Jewish life across the globe.

Here at home, we support Israel through the advocacy that we do with all levels of government. Locally, and through The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), we are in constant communication with government officials, media, and leaders throughout Canadian society to advocate for Israel’s best interests.

These are but a few of the ways that our Federation has aligned itself to not only stand in solidarity with Israel, but to create positive, lasting change at home and abroad – and we are always looking for ways to do more.

Shabbat Shalom,

Elaine Goldstine
Chief Executive Officer
