The Berenshteyn Family
Tell us about your family and how you heard about PJ Library!
We’re the Berenshteyn family- Daniel (6), Michael (4), Mia (9 months), mom and dad Michal and Leo. We love spending time together and making memories, especially travelling and exploring new places and making discoveries through art and play. Although Michal and Leo come from different places (mom from Israel, dad from Ukraine), our values, language and family traditions brought us together. There is never a dull moment in our household – there’s a lot of energy, fun and joy in our home and we love every minute of it. We are active members of the Jewish community and word spread quickly from our family and friends that PJ Library is a must for any growing family.

Tell us about your experiences with PJ Library and how this program (books, events and/or initiatives) has impacted your family.
PJ Library has been a great resource for staying connected to our Jewish roots and making learning fun for our kids through reading and activities. The books have become a part of our bedtime routine and the events have helped build our network of families in the community. PJ Library provides everybody a sense of belonging and common connection.

What are your child(ren)'s favourite PJ Library books?
Sunrise, Sunset was among the first books we received and the kids loved it. The holiday books are also so timely and great to connect the kids to the holidays and Hebrew vocabulary. The children enjoyed the rhymes in the book Rosh Hashanah is Coming! Dinosaur on Shabbat was a favourite - it resonated with the kids and their experiences at home and daycare – Shabbat, challah, candles, dinosaurs, what could be better?

What has been your child's/family's favourite PJ Library program or initiative and why?
The Shalom Baby Showers, hosted by the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, for each of our kids was a great way to introduce the newest members of the community. It was so great to meet in person. PJ Library also supported at-home Shabbat dinners for the family with challah, grape juice, candles and activities which the kids really enjoyed. The parent connectors have also been essential to our PJ Library experience!

Anything else you would like to share?
We’re grateful that this resource is available – the content is enriching and has helped not only our kids build better connections but adults as well. We love that the content in these books promotes literacy while at the same time instilling important values such as being respectful, compassionate and caring towards self, others and the environment and much much more! Thank you!
