The Arroyave Family
Tell us about your family and how you heard about PJ Library!
We are the Arroyave family, Andrea, Alex (11) and Sofia (4). We are originally from Colombia but Alex and I lived in South Africa for two years, too. We moved to Canada in 2019 and Winnipeg slowly became our 'home sweet home'.

Tell us about your experiences with PJ Library and how this program (books, events and/or initiatives) has impacted your family.
Alex goes to Gray Academy and that's where we were first introduced to PJ Library and decided to sign up and started attending programs and events.
Every month my kids are excited to receive a new book! They pay attention when I bring in the mail and ask "Did I get a new book, Mom?!" and then when they receive their books they make a surprised happy face that melts my heart – it is something very special to us. They are always very happy to jump into a new story. We love the fact that the books teach important lessons, values and Jewish traditions.
The events are very important to us, especially during the pandemic. We feel closer to the community, we feel we belong and feel connected in the distance. It is amazing to be able to participate in the celebration of the holidays and events with other families; it helps us feel less lonely in these times of isolation, it also helps us socialize and meet new people.

What are your child(ren)'s favourite PJ Library books?
Sofia's favourite book is "Old Noah's Ark" – she loves animals and she reads it almost every night to her grandma through video call. She also enjoys when I read "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" to her because she thinks it is funny. Alex's favourite book is "Shield of the Maccabees" as Chanukah is his favourite holiday. He also enjoys "Rabbi Harvey vs. the Wisdom Kid" – Alex likes graphic novels a lot!

What has been your child's/family's favourite PJ Library program or initiative and why?
Because of the pandemic we haven't been able to attend many in-person events, but we enjoyed the Sukkot Family event, it was full of fun. We also enjoy the online events – Alex enjoyed cooking with other kids at PJ Our Way's "How to be a Mensch by Catherine Newman" and Sofia enjoys Storytime on Sundays.

Anything else you would like to share?
PJ Library is very dear to our hearts, we feel at home and with family when we are there and attend events. It is such a warm, welcoming community that brings so much joy to our lives. We are very grateful for all the effort that all of you put into making this place so wonderful, thank you!
