The Kiselev Family
Tell us about your family and how you heard about PJ Library!
Our family is from Saint Petersburg (Russia). We immigrated to Winnipeg in 2019 with the help of the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg. When our son was born, we signed him to receive PJ Library books in Russia. After we immigrated, we were very excited to know that PJ Library is in Winnipeg too!

Tell us about your experiences with PJ Library and how this program (books, events and/or initiatives) has impacted your family.
It is wonderful to have books for children that can help them learn about Judaism, Jewish holidays, traditions, and ideas. Every time there is a Jewish holiday, we pick a PJ Library book about it and read it together. It helps our son better understand the story and meaning behind Jewish holidays, and it also helps him better understand celebrations and events in his school, Gray Academy.
We go to Chabad-Lubavitch and celebrate all Jewish holidays, but PJ Library books transform learning about Judaism and Jewish holidays into a fun activity. PJ Library books also help our son learn English and improve his reading. He is very excited when he gets a new book and asks us to read it the same day.

What are your child(ren)'s favourite PJ Library books?
Our son’s favourite books are "Hanukkah Bear", "A Hole in the Boat," and "Joseph had a Little Overcoat." We read these books to him in English and in Russian, and we read the "Hanukkah Bear" every year during the Hanukkah celebration.

What has been your child's family favourite PJ Library program or initiative and why?
We enjoyed outdoor events such as PJ Library in the park. We also love the Passover Haggadahs from PJ Library. We used them during the Seder – they are very nice and have beautiful illustrations, which are awesome for kids. Due to COVID, there were no community-organized Seders and these colourful Haggadahs helped us celebrate Pesach at home.

Anything else you would like to share?
We are incredibly grateful to be able to receive PJ Library books. We believe they are great for teaching children.
