The Plau-Podesta Family
Tell us about your family and how you heard about PJ Library!
We are Shayna, Chris, Mira (3 years old) and Malak (1 year old). Only Mira and Malak are from Winnipeg, we adults are from elsewhere! Shayna has lived in 5 countries and immigrated to Canada in 2009, and Chris is from BC. Shayna was raised in a deeply Jewish home; Chris is not Jewish but is proud that his children are Jewish. Although we are very happy that Winnipeg is now home, we have no family here and have a very diverse (ethnically, culturally, linguistically, religiously, sexually) array of chosen-family/friends; therefore as parents, we need to be very conscious, and conscientious about how to provide Mira and Malak with strong Jewish roots. With strong roots, nurtured within a richly diverse environment, they will know where they come from and have the tools to choose where they are going.

Tell us about your experiences with PJ Library and how this program (books, events and/or initiatives) has impacted your family.
PJ Library has provided us with the tools to provide a Jewish home. It has taught Chris (and his parents) things about Jewish traditions and holidays (My Friend the Apple Tree) and Hebrew phrases (Happy Happy) and Jewish values (How Kind!) and enabled him to then teach Mira as she grows in her own curiosity and understanding of yiddishkeit. Malak is still quite young but he too is soaking it in…whether it was the Pizza Shabbat, helping the plants grow for Tu B'Shevat or the (finally!) in-person Purim Carnivals.

What are your child(ren)'s favourite PJ Library books?
Mira really, really likes Bagels for Benny (that is how she learned the word synagogue and ark) and we STILL read Joseph Had a Little Overcoat. Moti the Mitzvah Mouse is also a big hit for both of them. Mira can connect it to things we do at home (tzedakah box or visiting the sick) and Malak really likes the mouse. In addition, we read the story to Grandma (Shayna’s mom who is Jewish) who is in California and she can share and teach about mitzvot.

What has been your child's/family's favourite PJ Library program or initiative and why?
We are very grateful for the Shalom Baby Showers hosted by the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg (Mira’s in person; Malak’s on Zoom) and generous welcome-baby baskets (Malak still loves his stuffed Torah). We all really enjoyed the Pizza Shabbat (and connecting with everyone on zoom and singing together) and the Shabbat Picnic. Mira and Malak both loved the Shabbat Shalom! book that came with the Shabbat Picnic. We also had a lot of (freezing) fun going to visit the snow elephant at -28C.

What has been your child's/family's favourite PJ Library program or initiative and why?
For centuries people have tried to figure out what Judaism is. A religion, a culture, a nation… all of the above? A mixture of the above? What is clear is that Judaism is both rooted at home and in the community and it is carried on through words and stories, often written down in books. PJ Library provides tools to enable the transmission of Judaism l’dor v’dor (from generation to generation) in our modern, complicated and multicultural society.
