New Market Trend for Laser Peening Demands Parallel Capacity to Process Parts while Building Equipment

LSP Technologies (LSPT) has been in the business of counteracting metal fatigue with laser peening for 27 years.  LSPT reports customers are seeking technologies that increase the life span of mission critical parts that can 1) quickly begin processing parts at a supplier’s facility and 2) simultaneously start construction of equipment to their specifications that they own and incorporate into their manufacturing process. 

The need for rapid adoption of laser peening is often coming from the aerospace industry.  Whether driven by an ongoing improvement activity, addressing a safety issue, or a variety of market forces that have made time of the essence, the resulting demands are the same. Fortunately for LSPT, experience processing parts and building customizable equipment are both familiar territories.

“A successful and rapid qualification in an exacting industry such as aerospace takes experience coupled with a level of transparency and collaboration,” explains Eric Collet, LSPT President and Chief Operating Officer. “We have customers who come to us having already identified exactly how they want parts laser peened, others who rely upon our expertise to help formulate a processing plan, or anywhere in between. We got our start production laser peening of aerospace parts years ago, so it’s getting back to our roots in a way. It also allows us to use our equipment just as our customers do so that continuous improvement for our equipment builds happens organically.”

Providing laser peening equipment for customers to incorporate into their in-house operation is a strategic direction that LSPT pioneered beginning in 2015. “Putting customizable laser peening equipment into the hands of our customers takes the mystery out of the process and empowers our customers to easily implement laser peening. It was a gamble at the time and it is paying off. Given what the market is presently demanding, I’m grateful for the years we have under our belt to work on standard product configuration and generally just getting better at building laser peening systems,” Collet shared. “Our audience for equipment sales is not only the OEM but also companies that are interested in supporting them by establishing laser peening service centers,” Collet stated.

They are both recent graduates of Indian Hills Community College with their AAS in Laser and Optics. After growing up and attending school in Iowa, they have both relocated to Ohio to begin their careers.
