One Book, One School Family Event

Wednesday, March 16, 5-7pm, Hawthorne Elementary School

All students and staff at Hawthorne have been reading "The World According to Humphrey".  On Wednesday, March 16, they will have the One Book, One School Family event from 5 to 7pm. There will be free activities for students and free pizza will be provided.  They will also be having  informational tables from community partners, including South Los Altos Neighborhood Association (SLANA).  Our table will be outside.

Please stop by, say hello, find out more, and consider joining SLANA.  Memberships are only $5.00 a year for individuals and $10.00 a year for businesses.

We will also be collecting used eyeglasses for the NM Lions Club from Las Cruces to thank them for their support of vision screenings.  Being able to see properly is vital to students' education efforts.  On behalf of the students of Hawthorne Elementary School, we thank them for the vision screenings they did at Hawthorne on February 28.  230 students were screened.

Our table will be outside, so if you have any unneeded eyeglasses, please drop them by and add them to the collection box.

In addition, we will be giving away children's books that were meant for the little library that was at Daniel Webster Park.  Unfortunately, the little library had to be removed yet again due to vandalism.

Board of Directors for 2022

Our annual meeting was held on Tuesday, February 8.   The board remains the same as last year.  No new nominations were received.  Thank you board of directors for agreeing to continue serving South Los Altos!  Board members are as follows:

Stephen Martos-Ortiz, President
Jim Ahrend, Vice-President (and Webmaster)
Debbie Conger, Secretary/Treasurer
Allen Osborn, Director
Wendy Wofford, Director

Copper Trail Landscaping

The landscaping along the east end of Copper Trail has been delayed again.  The City had to resubmit their State Grant request.  The City is not sure how long the approval will take.  It could be really quick, but it could take a month or two.  The City cannot commit to a timeline, but still expects construction to start this year sometime. The contractor is ready to schedule as soon as the City has an NoO to proceed.

SLANA recent postcard mailing

Those of you who live in South Los Altos or own a business were mailed a postcard in February advertising the annual general meeting, our website and Facebook page, and other things.  This mailing was sponsored in part by Councilor Pat Davis.

It was also made possible because of two donations, including a sizable donation from SLANA's founder, Ruth Connery.  Ruth moved out of South Los Altos decades ago but continues to support us in our efforts to improve the neighborhood.  We thank Ruth for her donation and her continued support!

Neighborhood Clean-up

Are you interested in participating in, or helping to organize, a trash pick up in the neighborhood?  If so, please send an email to contact@slananm.org and let us know if there is a particular area you would like to help clean up.

Join or Renew

Annual SLANA memberships cost $5 for individuals and $10 for businesses. Any memberships paid now are good through February 2023. To join or renew, go to our website https://slananm.org for payment options, including PayPay.

Please consider joining so that we can continue with our postcard mailing next year.  It is not a guarantee that we will be able to get a sponsorship or donations next year and it would mean a lot if we had neighborhood support to continue our efforts to keep everyone informed.
