CARBON REMOVALS WORKING GROUP
While it is critical to follow a mitigation hierarchy that prioritises not emitting greenhouse gases in the first place, it is well established that as the global economy decarbonises, a shift from avoiding and reducing emissions to carbon removals will be needed.
Many approaches to removing carbon from the atmosphere have either high upfront costs, long time scales for delivery of impact, or both. Moreover, some emerging technology-based removals can perpetuate the use of fossil fuels or pose other serious risks to ecosystems.
For these reasons, Gold Standard sought stakeholder feedback and a Board decision on considering technologies and practices for carbon removals within our scope of work. With this input, we are now convening a Carbon Removal Expert Working Group to provide technical expertise to design and develop best practices aimed at ensuring integrity as the market for carbon removals develops.
We invite expressions of interest from leading thinkers on carbon removals to join this working group to co-create with Gold Standard:
- A high level vision
- Scope and Activity Requirements and eligibility criteria (e.g. similar to those for Land Use and Forests)
- Updates to Gold Standard for the Global Goals Principles & Requirements documents, particularly Safeguarding Principles, as needed
- An SDG Impact Reporting Tool, similar to those launched for testing in other activity types
- Gold Standard-approved methodologies for specific activities, including digital approaches
If you are an expert in this field and would like to register your interest, please submit this carbon removals working group application form or to nominate a candidate email vikash.talyan@goldstandard.org by 20 June 2021.
