November, 25 2019
In today’s Digest, we meet with African illustrators who raise awareness on the risks of irregular migration among Ivorian youth during the Cocobulles festival in Côte d’Ivoire. Ahead of the Global Migration Film Festival, IOM in Niger launches a month-long film caravan across the country. Still in the artistic spirit, IOM organizes next week a symposium including a photo exhibition and live painting performance in collaboration with the Dak’Art (Dakar Biennale) to share migration trends in West Africa, including the upsurge of migrants taking the western route from Senegal. In Chad, the Joint Initiative supports the assistance of non-Chadians following a recent incident that forced the evacuation of 1,500 migrants in a gold mine in the north. IOM scales up its assisted voluntary return programme for stranded migrants to West Africa from Algeria. In Ghana, youth talk about irregular migration and the challenges they face in their country. Finally, we focus on Senegal. In an interview for the Belgian RTBF, IOM’s Regional Psychosocial Officer highlights the social and psychosocial barriers to reintegration faced by returned migrants. Also, IOM and the National Office for Professional Training signed an MoU to facilitate the reintegration of returned migrants in Senegal.
