Show us, Lord, your love;
and grant us your salvation. - Psalm 85:8

Week of December 2nd, 2018

Sunday, Dec. 2nd, 2018

Greetings in Christ!
Congratulations to our  2nd graders and their families who participated in first reconcilliation yesterday! Another group of students will be making their reconcilliation this coming Thursday. I encourage all community members to pray for our 2nd graders as they prepare for this beautiful sacrament.

As a general policy, when the public school is in session, we will follow the public school decisions on closing of our school due to weather conditions.  Please listen to one of the Green Bay radio or TV stations for announcements when the weather is severe. On days when St. Bernard School is in session but the public school is not, the GRACE system president will communicate any delays, early dismissals or cancellations with the GRACE principals. The principals will in turn communicate the plan with the bus company and school community.

If the weather is extremely cold, zero (0) degrees or below, either regular temperature or wind chill, students will come into school in the morning at drop-off and will not go out for recess. Students are expected to have proper cold weather gear on days when snow is on the ground, and weather is cold. Cold weather gear includes mittens/gloves, snow pants, snow boots and a hat for K-5th grade students.  The Preschool program will provide specific directions on the gear that is expected and when students should bring that gear. Students in 6th-8th grades are expected to have a jacket, hat and gloves and are exempt from snow-pants unless they are playing on the field in the snow.

Students who do not have cold weather gear will play by the wall outside of the school building doors in order to ensure their safety. Students are encouraged to be responsible and bring their gear to school so that they can run around and play with their friends.  Additionally, students will not be allowed to play on the blacktop when snow is on the ground or weather is at freezing temperatures due to the possibility of black ice.   ADDENDUM: Due to the dry winter we have had thus far, we have defined "Cold Weather" as weather cold enough for snow or 32 F.

I hope that everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. We are in the process of preparing ourselves and the students for the coming of Advent which will begin next Weekend, December 1st and 2nd. There are many ways to celebrate the Advent season together as a family. Besides the traditional Advent wreath and candles, creating a Jesse tree as a family and studying the lineage of Christ is a wonderful way to wait for the birth of Christ together. Please see the block below with some resources for Advent and Catholic families. Additionally, students in 3rd-8th grade were able to participate in pre-Advent reconciliation thanks to Fr. Mark and his coordination of this opportunity.

We will be praying for corrections officers in the month of December. At our 1st-4th grade concert, our 1st and 2nd graders will be brining up wrapped offerings that we will deliver to corrections officers at local facilities. This is a spiritual work of mercy - pray for the living, and comfort the sorrowful. Additionally, we have several classes who will be participating in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing at PickNSave to partcipate in the Kettle Challenge.
As many of you know, Mrs. Herman will be out for approximately 10 weeks beginning December 5th. I am happy to intorduce you to her long term substitute teacher who will be shadowing the classroom beginning Monday, November 26th.

My name is Natalie Rivera and I am very excited to get to know St. Bernard's School! I have lived in the Green Bay area for most of my life and attended Notre Dame Elementary and Middle Schools in De Pere as a child.  I love the Spanish language and caring for the environment, I lived in Panama for two years serving in the Peace Corps where I improved my Spanish skills and met my husband, Albis.  We currently live in De Pere with our Cat, Milo, who is also Panamanian. We love going to sporting events and watching the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers.
Welcome to the St. Bernard Family Mrs. Rivera!

We are combining Special Persons Day and Open House this year. This event will be held on Sunday, January 27th from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon. More details will be forthcoming but we are working with the parish to welcome families and special persons at the 8:00 am and 10:00 am Sunday Masses, followed by tours and displays of activities in the school building. All classrooms will be open and as we have in the past, there will be something for everyone!
We have some activities planned for this special month. If you have a desire to help out with in-school activities, please email Mrs. Blahnik so that she can put you on the volunteer list as the activities get formulated.

Have a blessed week!

Parents, in the case of a campus emergency, our final Rally Point is Wally's Spot (near Walgreens on Main St.). Students know to proceed to Wally's Spot or the PickN'Save parking lots in a real emergency based on their proximity to the rally point. Students will be assembeled at Wally's Spot via city bus as our final meeting location in a real emergency.

In a real emergency, parents should NOT come to our campus. Parents and vehicles can get in the way of emergency vehicles. Please ALWAYS plan to meet at Wally's Spot for communication and reunification with SBS students, staff and other commuity members.
