Summer ~ June ~ 2022

Team MBYC News & Upcoming Events

Summer is in full swing here at Mission Bay Yacht Club! We have Sabots, O'Pen Skiffs, Lasers, CFJs, C420s, a Hobie Cat and even a Laser >> all getting out on the water each day!! Everyone is learning and having fun, from our littles in our Rock Star classes to the Advanced Race Team teens training for upcoming National and World Championships!

The Summer Sailing Program is going really well with a wonderful group of coaches leading the way. We've seen everyone get through first-day jitters, swim tests and capsize drills with smiles all around. Our 24 new Club Sabot sails look phenomenal out on the bay and our fleets of boats look impressive in their follow-the-leader and other drill formations.

On top of just the regular Summer Program planning and operations, in May and June MBYC also hosted the High School Pacific Coast Championships, the High School National Championships and the US Youth Sailing Championships!! All of these regattas with well over 100 competitors in attendance. Everyone walked away having had a great experience on and off the water. MBYC truly is an outstanding venue full of wonderful people!!
SUMMER SAILING!!
US YOUTH SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mission Bay Yacht Club had the incredible honor of hosting the 2022 US Youth Sailing Championships. This took an incredible amount of planning, effort and teamwork from the Junior Program, MBYC Members and friends. The event overall was a huge success!

Congratulations to our own Ben Conroy, finishing 8th of 51 in the Radial fleet and Efe Derman, who was awarded the Dave Perry Sportsmanship Award after being nominated by the US Sailing Judges for doing the right thing on the water! Our third Laser Radial sailor was Owen Fretwell, who at 13, was one of the youngest in the fleet. All three boys represented MBYC wonderfully on and off the water and we are so proud.

In a last minute leap into action, Cole Tillson took on a struggling 29er program that was without a skipper and did the most noble of things in offering to sail with her and for this we are also very proud. Our sweetest victories are not always shown in the results.

WEST MARINE US OPEN SAILING SERIES
MBYC's Laser program has been thriving recently as clearly seen in the team we brought to the US Open Sailing Series with 9 MBYC sailors among the 45 boats in the ILCA 6/Radial fleet. Ben and Oakley finished 15 and 18 respectively while the rest of the team worked hard throughout the weekend and gained experience racing in a large fleet. Efe, Owen, Kaden, Liam, Carlin, Alex and Clare really impressed over the intense 3 days of racing. We'd like to give a special shout out to Clare on her very first big event, her first real Laser regatta really, for hanging in there and improving with every race. What an absolute champ!!

"I was very happy with how the team did overall, with our youngsters beating some well-established sailors in the fleet and our new laser sailors fighting in some challenging conditions." - Coach Diego
SUMMER GOLD CUP @ NHYC
Regatta Report from Coach Ryan Ratliffe

In the 17 boat A fleet we saw Sean Kaseburg make some amazing improvements for his first big regatta in the pinnacle sabot fleet, even finishing top 5 in one race! In the 23 boat B fleet we are super proud to be able to move Braden Ozarski up to A fleet after taking the win in his fleet, finishing off the weekend's last race with a win to seal the deal! Also bringing home a Gold Cup in B was Loki Barrett placing 5th. Santiago Escobar was also a fun highlight, with only a few B regattas under his belt and being unhappy with his first day of the regatta he turned it around and moved up almost 10 places in the standings after the second day.
The success we saw up north was due to our diligent training in as similar conditions as we could manufacture here at Mission Bay, after these results we are even more excited for the future of these superb sabot sailors! Evan Markworth in the 29 boat C1 fleet started out the regatta hot winning the first race and ending up 7th overall. We're proud of ALL our MBYC sailors at Gold Cup including Cody and Kai in B fleet, Jett in C1 and Parker in C2.
WE LOVE OUR COACHES!!
