Let's talk about the DC budget!

How our city spends its money reflects our values and beliefs in what is possible in a fair and just society. I'm sending this special "extra" email to fill neighbors in on all the great information and meetings related to the DC budget. Let's get engaged and make our voices heard!

Read Up on the DC Budget.

The DC Fiscal Policy Institute is a great resource for learning more about the DC budget. Check out the handy timeline below. And you can read a user-friendly "Resident's Guide to the DC Budget" here.

Some of the more technical, nitty-gritty details are available from the Office of the Chief Financial Officer

From the Fair Budget Coalition:

"It's that time of year--time for the Fair Budget Coalition's budget report! To celebrate and get the word out about the release, we're planning to have a party. Let's eat good food, play games, learn about the budget and learn more ways to get involved in holding the city accountable for putting PEOPLE over PROFITS!"

From DC Working Families Party:

"Do you want affordable childcare for all in D.C.? Would you like to meet people that share your values? How about enjoy some appetizers and drinks? Join Working Families Party for a campaign launch party outlining the exciting work we are doing for Birth to Three. We're organizing to advocate for funding at the mayor's budget forums, and this party will be a great place for you to not only see how this bill will improve the lives of D.C. residents, but also how you can help!

Please RSVP and we can't wait to see you there."

Join Mayor Bowser for a Budget Engagement Forum.

Mayor Bowser has three upcoming, in-person Budget Engagement Forums. The closest to neighbors in Single Member District 4B02 will take place on Monday, February 25th at 6:30 p.m. at Roosevelt High School (4301 13th Street, NW). Unfortunately, this is the same night as the ANC 4B monthly meeting, so I am hoping to attend the forum in Deanwood on the 23rd.

In my experience, these forums have involved the allocation of a dollar (representing the DC budget) across specific sectors. While this simplistic exercise does not capture the city's various revenue streams (and how those might be changed), it is a valuable opportunity to share your views on where you believe money should be allocated. You can read more about these forums
here.
