Spring Greetings from the Studio. It's wonderful to be seeing Full Circle students nearly every day of the week! You are ALL sounding good, practicing well and absolutely improving every week. Super nice work; I am very proud of you and happy for you!

Pico and I are a bit lonely here at the studio, but when YOU enter the Zoom Room, it sounds like you are here "in body & in fiddle" – I can even hear you warming up if I am in the ladies' room!!!! LOL

You are all doing quite well, and FYI, the Zoom issues have been mostly resolved, and I'll chat with everyone in person about that.

Next week is May Lessons Check week. Feel free to stop by the studio and slip your check under the 401 door if you like. Or, if it's more convenient, please mail your May check  to:

Explore & Experience – Backwards Bow
Here's this week's idea for practicing in a way that helps your body explore and experience the bow firsthand. As we say, "It's all about the bow."
  • Warm up with long bows on open strings, 4-8x on each string.
  • BUT: hold your bow backwards so your bow hold is near the tip end, as shown.
This completely changes balance, control, expectations – a real shake-up. Yes, you can laugh :-)

I learned this from observing the accomplished students of the Menuhin School in England, when I was 15 and attending the First International String Conference with my teacher, Paul Rolland. (He brought me along as a student guinea pig, because he was at the beginning of a complete overhaul of my playing... 4 hours a day of practice, just to get started. LOL)
Contributions from our Students
Though we can't be together, we can still share!

Here is "Hello Sailor," arranged and transcribed for violin by our newest student on board – Tom. This tune has all the things you could wish to wrastle with; it's fun and challenging. Welcome, Tom! You are already rockin' us!

Get a PDF of Tom's arrangement of Hello Sailor.
If you have a tune you've written or arranged, a photo of your home violin practice space, a poem, or anything else to share with the Full Circle community, email it to me for possible inclusion in a future newsletter.
Richard and his grand-daughter perform together with great joy!
Full Circle ZOOM Set
Our Zoom Set at the Studio has all the essentials: Fiddle, Pico, COFFEE, piles of music, fun stuff, several music stands. LOL. Missing you all! Remember, we shall be together soon!
This Week's Two Set Violin Video
If you thought holding your bow from the other end was hard, take a look at the challenges that the Two Set guys throw at Hilary Hahn: Play with only the lower third of the bow. Play while hula hooping. Switch your right and left hands... and more! Click on the picture to play the video.
Inspiring Quote of the Week
Hilary Hahn talks about how her violin has a life of its own...

"I've had [my violin] for about 13 years, and I don't see any reason to change; I find that the violin just keeps responding really well. It changes itself every year as it ages, it goes through all these different environmental changes, and of course, the traveling... It develops on its own, just as any performer does. It's a very stable instrument, so I can rely on it, but at the same time it always shows me a different side of things than I expect." -- Hilary Hahn
