Fall 2021

Happy Fall Greetings to Friends and Students,

Here at Full Circle Music, the Circle feels more full than ever as we live into the depth of our experiences & connectedness, and feel the gratefulness of making & learning music together.

Fall brings a rootedness to our sanctuary community at Salmon Falls Mills: We have persevered, become greater as musicians and human beings, supported one another, and honored the paths of our unique musical journeys.

Our Private Lesson Program has expanded to hold a monthly Master Class, adapted to suit the adult learner with a great deal of creativity and individual input. A series of small but highly relevant individual lesson “Projects” rounds out the program.

The Tunes with a Side of Technique class has become a weekly charging station for learning, laughing, in-depth musicianship/technique experience, and personal musical goal-setting. We are exploring “kick-offs” and “tags” with traditional tunes at the moment.

Our next group to begin (planned for January) will be a classical ensemble group of current students only. I am hoping to hire a professional piano accompanist, (FV) to bring musical richness and harmony to this group.

Yours in Harmony & Joy,
Cayt (& Pico)

P.S. The Full Circle Newsletter is now on a seasonal schedule: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer. We'll continue to collect photos, videos, cartoons, links, music, quotes and practice tips — and you can help! Send Cayt your violin-related photos, video links, news articles, etc. so that we can share them with the entire Full Circle Violin & Fiddle Studio community.
Pick a Word to Guide Your Practice
This tip comes to us by way of the British Academy of Sound Therapy, with a slight detour & some tweaking!

A BIG thank you to the BAST team, for introducing me to this profound practice in our virtual classroom during my 2-day class
.

For your next practice session or maybe week of practice:

  1. Choose one Word which describes your overall most important, meaningful result. One word only. It can relate to the physical, mentalspiritual or emotional realm. (Another BAST gift.) Don't limit yourself to the examples above – pick your own Word, that resonates most with you!
  2. You can keep your Word in mind as you approach each item of practice and your relationship with it.
  3. At your designated end point, evaluate the result of your Word. Do you feel like this influenced and affected your practice and results? Was your mind opened to some new concepts with your Word in view?

Hopefully you have gained a useful approach, and enjoyed the process! Let us know!

"Kindergarten & Physical Therapy"
Following up on the article in our last newsletter about beginning violin as an adult, we wanted to share a link to violinist.com, where Laurie Niles aptly describes the process as "a cross between kindergarten and physical therapy." By this she means that we have to be comfortable with doing things we aren't yet good at, and we need to train our bodies in strength, dexterity and muscle memory. Her full article includes some great perspective.
Two Set Violin Virtual Tour
Many of you in the Full Circle Violin family enjoy Brett and Eddie, the Two Set Violin duo. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see them in their unedited, live glory instead of in a video? Now's your chance, as they embark on a livestream Virtual Tour. Their North American date is December 28, but never fear – if you buy a ticket ($20) you get access to the recording for 72 hours to view the show when it's convenient for you.

Violin Boat Cruises Venetian Canals
On September 18th, a 39-foot violin-shaped boat began plying the canals of Venice. Built by local artisans, the boat carried a string quartet playing Vivaldi, on its maiden voyage. You can read all about it here. (Thanks to Susan, for sending in the NYT article linked here. If you're unable to access the NYT, simply Google "violin boat Venice" to learn more.)
