A New Beginning

Safe Schools Desert Cities welcomes the new school year with a full schedule of activities. In this edition of Connection, learn about our upcoming events, continued community involvement, and a new partnership.

  • President Gloria Kapp reports on the 2021-22 scholarship recipients and explains our new partnership with the Inland Empire Community Foundation.
  • Safe Schools Desert Cities has been accepted into the Desert Fast Pitch Competition with a chance to win a portion of the $67,000 in prize money for the organization.
  • The Desert Sun and the Inland Empire Community Foundation shine a light on our work at Safe Schools Desert Cities with an article posted online and in the Sunday print edition of the newspaper.

Why SSDC is important

Statistics show that LGBTQ+ students are at greater risk of being bullied and harassed than others. Safe Schools Desert Cities works to create safe, empowering spaces for these youths along with schools' GSA clubs. See here to learn more about the importance of SSDC.

SSDC Scholarship updates

The Burton/May Pride scholarship program headed by SSDC has moved administrative tasks for the program to the Inland Empire Community Foundation. SSDC will continue to determine the application requirements, schedule, and scholarship recipients. To learn more, click here.

2022 Fast Pitch Competition

Safe Schools Desert Cities joins the 2022 Desert Fast Pitch competition, a Valley-wide program that aims to assist nonprofit organizations by polishing their pitching skills in a competition where the organizations will compete to win additional funding for their organization.

The Desert Sun interviewed Safe School Desert Cities Board President Eric Ornelas on how SSDC empowers local LGBTQ+ youth, who are more susceptible to harassment and bullying than youth who don't identify with the LGBTQ+ community.

The Trevor Project National Survey

Results of The Trevor Project’s latest survey are out! “The Trevor Project’s 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health demonstrates that rates of suicidal thoughts have trended upward among LGBTQ young people over the last three years, making our life-saving work all the more important.”

SSDC invites you to contribute in making a difference in the lives of local LGBTQ+ students. Volunteering and donations are great ways to help as SSDC depends on the sponsorship of the community to make our support of the desert's LGBTQ+ youth possible.
